Decaf soy latte... could cause dumping? nausea? 1 week out

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I am one week out of surgery. Went to my first post-op appt today where I was able to honestly answer that I had no nausea, no vomitting, etc. Everything seemed to be running smoothly. Then, as a 'celebration' to hear that all was well and I was 'brave' during the staple removal, I took myslef to the lobby and got a Decaf soy latte with sugar free Caramel flavor.

I know I was not dehydrated prior to having it... but halfway home while sipping it I got extremely lightheaded and nausous.

By the time I got home, I NEEDED to lay down. I didn't vomit, but just felt generally crappy.

Was this 'dumping'? Is soy milk high in sugar? I usually have been using unsweetened almond milk for milk replacement.... they don't have it, so I went with the soy milk. Or maybe they used regular Caramel instead of SF?

I certainly didn't intend on making my happy pouch so angry.... what do you think?

Probably..I haven't experienced it yet myself i don't think, but sounds like it. To my knowledge supposed to be on Clear Liquids for first 3 weeks. That wouldn't be milk of any kind.

I'd ask the place you got the latte from if the soy milk is unsweetened soy. I'm guessing it wasn't. You did have a case of dumping syndrome. I think it was after my 6 week appointment I tried to test the waters and tried what Dairy Queen called their low sugar ice cream in a tropical blizzard. I got all dizzy, sick and passed out. I managed to call my husband and let him know where I was and a friend dropped him off to drive me home. So it can be very dangerous to have the type of dumping syndrome I had. Be very careful as you heal.

Ah... There is so much variety in the post op diets. My surgical center/nutritionist team has everyone start full liquids first day home from hospital for 1 week. Haven't had any problem with my unsweetened almond milk, or keifer.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
