I was sleeved 3 years ago and have been on acid reflux medication ever since then. I have been on 30mgs of Omeprazole (20mgs in the morning and 10mgs at night) and have worked my way down to only one dosage of 10mgs in the morning. Very happy with my progress! Now here's the problem, I can't have my doctor prescribe anything lower - the 10mg dosage is already "custom-made". I tried to go one day with and the next day without the 10mgs but then I can't stand eat, bear the pain or sleep properly.

I have tried several diets where I completely avoided acidic foods, consuming apple cider vinegar (worst idea ever) and aloe vera... Nothing has helped. I think the problem is not that my sleeve is under producing or over producing acid (I think our stomach perfectly adjusts to its new biology)… The real problem is the esophageal valve that is opened when it's not supposed to (maybe due to the smaller stomach size?) Even while on medication, I'll sometimes lie down and fall asleep without meaning to and wake up coughing and in pain. The pharmaceutical drug, Omeprazole in this case, is only designed to reduce/stop acid production, which does alleviate the pain, but it doesn't target the main cause...

I’m wondering if anyone else can relate to my experiences and has found a natural remedy or an herbal cure. I really don’t want to be on pharmaceutical drugs for the rest of my life – the long term side effects are disgusting and I’m already experiencing some of them.

Hi, did you get a hiatal hernia repair as well? It helps if you did. I had one done with mine.

Helped me get approved with insurance ;)

Regardless , my doc prescribed over the counter Pepcid AC, I have the cherry chewables and prescribed to be taken 2x a day.

When I take them I'm fine, when I don't I have heartburn :)..so they're a better alternative, although still medicine, I know,

But just a supplement.

Here, check it out,

My Doc says 90% of his overweight patients have these,

Hiatal hernia, direct cause of acid reflux.

It's an easy scope check to look for it,

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
