Pre-Op Diet Problems

Recommended Posts

I'm on day 4 of my 14 day liquid diet and having a problem I didn't expect, I don't want to eat! Is anyone else having a problem getting all of their shakes down? I'm getting nauseous when I'm drinking them (5 Bariatric Advantage per day) and in between my stomach burns and my burps taste like stomach acid. The nutritionist had me start taking an antacid but it's really not helping. I would be happy to just not eat anything at this point! Anyone else having similar issues? Advice? I'm getting scared I'm not going to make it for 10 more days! :(

Do you suffer from acid reflux? Are the shakes you are taking called Bariatric Advantage High Protein Meal Replacement shakes? I haven't used this product but the description looks like it would be good to go. [The Bariatric Advantage High Protein Meal Replacement contains 150 to 160 calorie serving provides a full 27 grams of protein, with only 7 grams of carbohydrate (of which 5 grams are Fiber, and only 1 gram is sugar) and a 1.5 grams of fat.] Since you are taking 5 shakes a day, you are trying to replace 5 meals a day. Are these shakes a small amount of powder at the bottom of an empty bottle that you just add Water to and shake? If you are suffering from acid reflux, you might try taking Prilosec. It should probably work better than antacids.

Just so you know you are not the only one someone posted about the same thing (definitely different but at least not wanting to eat):

I had a very hard time with the Protein Shakes also during my pre-op diet. I was allowed 3 a day and could have an extra one in the evening if I really needed it.. I averaged a shake a day.. Every now and then I would get in two. I had to force the ones down.. I wasn't allowed to have solid food. It was Protein shakes and 64 ounces Clear Liquids. I had a lot of sugar free Jello and sugar popsicles and tried the Swanson fusions broth but the Mexican tortilla was just to much in the way of spices for me. So then I had some homemade good quality chicken broth 100 times better than that nasty bouillon and canned broth.

I am allowed up to 4 shakes a day, and clear liquids. I have only found I need 3 shakes (Breakfast, lunch, dinner), and I have 2-3 cups chicken broth (with a bit of Old Bay seasoning, a little spicy, very yummy!) during the day, plus a few bottles of Vitamin Water Zero and SF popsicles for dessert. That fills me up. The shakes in particular (with 30g protein) kill my hunger during the day.

I suggest trying a few different shakes, and see if one works for you. Lots of people talk about powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury and Isopure; I use Premier Protein.

After the surgery, we will all need to use Protein Shakes in order to get in enough Protein, so start looking for something that will work for you.

Day 3 of liquid diet here. Similar experience. the shakes i have are really good actually. Premiere Protein. But i too, just dont feel for them. For me, its kinda like im having a self punishing temper tantrum. Im supposed to have 7 a day. 1200 calories a day. SO NOT happening. Today i switched it up a lil. Im allowed broth, sf ice pips, sf crystal light, sf Jello. So, i had one shake, two cups chix bullion, and going to have 2 ice pops and call it a night.

I find im not PHYSICALLY hungry, but the HEAD hunger is evil! Good luck. I think im going to have to keep posting to get through this.

Thanks to everyone for the advice and support! Talked to my nutritionist and she suggested that it may be all of the Vitamins in the Bariatric Advantage that was irritating my stomach a bit. She had me start making them with milk instead of Water to see if that would "coat" my tummy a bit. I'm not a big milk person so I was really worried that I would be even more nauseous but much to my happy surprise, I am less nauseous and my stomach is not burning anymore! Here's hoping the rest of this diet is smooth sailing! Thanks again everyone! :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
