Terrified of change

Recommended Posts

I've been back in the gastric bi pass program for 6 months now. I was in the program 4 years ago and lost my insurance. I'm supposed to be losing 30 lbs but instead I have gained 6. I start over eaters anonymous on Monday. I need to wrap my head around this weight problem before I fail after surgery. Has anyone else gone through this fear of failure?

Many people experience a fear of failure when it comes to weight loss. This is cemented into their minds by the failures they experienced by years of "yo-yo" dieting. RNY gastric bypass surgery is a whole different experience. After surgery I completely lost my hunger. I found that it was not hard to lose weight when hunger was not constantly and incessantly gnawing at my bones.

Back to your problem, weight gain during the pre-op stage. Here are some recommendations:

Begin attending Bariatric Surgery Support Group meetings. They are generally free.

Walk 30 minutes every day.

Give up all carbonated beverages. I lost 20 pounds on giving up my 6 diet Coke a day habit pre-op alone.

Read the calorie labels of everything you consume, especially at fast food restaurants and try and pick low calorie foods. I use to love milk shakes at "Steak and Shake" but after reading the number of calories in a milkshake, I gave that up for life. On the other hand a crunchy taco at Taco Bell isn't bad nor a bowl of chili at Wendy's.

I would also add to James's comments to begin to ween sugars and bad carbohydrates out of your system.

Eat meals high in Protein and good vegetables. If you are not already doing this you must eat 3 meals per day. Skipping a meal only sets your metabolism wrong and messes with your system.

A day might look like this:

Breakfast :Scrambled eggs for Breakfast with turkey bacon or 1percent cottage cheese with sliced strawberries on it or SF Greek Yogurt.

lunch - salad with chicken breast and low calorie dressing - balsamic & olive oil is a good choice. Put a grilled chicken breast and hard boiled egg on it. The Protein will help ensure it stays with you longer. You could even add some cheese.< /p>

dinner - some type of lean protein such as baked chicken breast, turkey, pork tenderloin, fish, beef. Make a double portion of veggies and a salad with low cal dressing.

If you snack have an apple with Peanut Butter or a handful of nuts or even an ounce of cheese.

Stay away from: bread, Pasta, rice, white potatoes, sweets and processed foods.

If you begin to do this now, it will prepare you for post surgery and you will absolutely lose weight in the process.

You could also pick up some high quality Protein shakes such as Premier Protein found at costco or Sam's. You can have one as a meal or as a snack. It is high in protein, very low in sugar and tastes great.

And also as James said, go for a walk everyday. 30 minutes with ensure your body gets moving in the right direction. If you cannot go 30 minutes start with 15 and work up to it.

Good luck to you!

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
