Really strange physical reaction!

Recommended Posts

Hello all!

I'm now two weeks and two days past my RNY, and I'm happy to say I have had virtually no issues or complications. ^_^

However, yesterday I went to my sister's senior year meet and greet at school. We walked around for about an hour and a half, and I had rests in between. I felt fine until the end of the 1.5 hours, when I suddenly felt cold and clammy to the touch, but also like I was very hot, and my boyfriend was concerned because I was getting very white but my cheeks and chest were getting red. After just a minute or two of this I started feeling faint. I drank a bit of Water and sat down, but it wasn't until I sat for several more minutes and had some more Water that I started to feel even a little better. My mother is a diabetic, so she was able to check my blood sugar with her monitor, and it was normal. I know I'm not dehydrated.

Has anyone else ever experienced something like this? Or does anyone have any idea what this could have been? I was walking in and out of air conditioned rooms and hot, humid hallways. Could it have been a strong reaction to temperature changes?

I'm not terribly concerned, as I feel fine today, though tired. But I would really like to avoid whatever caused this strange reaction, especially since I almost fainted.

Thanks!

I am still waiting for my RNY but this happened to me not long ago. My husband, son and I went shopping and after about an hour I had the same symptoms. I was at a doctors apt the next day and mentioned what happened. She said it sounded like a hormonal hot flash. Not sure how old you are but just thought I would mention it. Hopefully it won't happen to you again. :)

I'm only 23. o.O it's not possible to have hot flashes at this age, is it? I do have PCOS, so maybe some kind of hormonal issue in general? How odd.

Did you happen to eat anything not on plan? Could it maybe be dumping? I hope not since you are not far along;). I hope you get it figured out. I am a year and a half out and if I eat too many carbs I get very faint and have hot cold flashes. But if I eat a strict low carb diet it never happens.

I had only had Water and my usual Protein Shake. :/ my next nutritionist appointment is not until the end of the month, and I can ask her then. It just really freaked me out. I've been following the plan to the letter... I hope I haven't done something wrong.

I am sure you haven't. Your body is having to adjust like crazy right now. Write down everything you eat and drink. I did and it helps a lot. But if you keep feeling off call your docs office and speak to a nurse. I have had to do it.

I'm pre-op and I have PCOS. I have hot flashes at times and if I've been walking for a while, I can tend to get drained of my energy, get hot and irritable, and my knees hurt. If I sit down for a few minutes, I'm ok. It's weird. I'm hoping that after the surgery, with time, I won't feel that way.

GBlady I bet you will feel so much better after surgery. I had a lot of health issues prior to surgery and I was able to get many of them under control rather quickly afterwards. Good luck!!

@@bekbek it did to me too, but when I tested my blood sugar it was on the higher side of normal. I still have no idea what it was and it has not happened since.

I did drink some of a Protein Shake afterward and started to feel a little better. Maybe that's it. O.o

sounds like dehydration causing a drop in blood pressure - i had that issue now and again pre op and it's worst post op - make sure you get your fluids in and electrolytes if needed.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
