Anyone have trouble getting enough calories?

Recommended Posts

I seem to be stuck at about 400 calories a day no matter how hard I try. (I get 60-80 grams of Protein though) I can't seem to eat more than about 4 bites. My dr wants me to 800 before I can work out and I'm very anxious to work out. Any tips on getting calories up?

How far out from surgery are you? I found for the first 4-6 weeks I was at 500 or less. Now I have started to get some hunger back and am working out. I typically eat between 700-900 daily now. I'm almost 10 weeks out. I do have to eat some Snacks (cheese strings, yogurt) during the day in addition to my meals to get the calories up. I also drink a Protein Shake daily. My surgeon would like me to eat 1000 calories/day, but I find that hard to do with healthy choices simply because of stomach space/timing issues with Water consumption!

4 weeks out and not even at 500. I have to be reminded to eat. I have been as low as 170 in a single day in the past two weeks. The trick is, I know I won't have the energy to workout if I don't get the required Protein, so I used that as an incentive to get up to about 500 so at least I'll go for brisk walk/jog.

Personally, I have been tolerating food well, but they fill me after a single bite. I had a 38 inch bougie, which is middling, but the restriction of anything but Clear liquids is still quite severe. However, this is nothing I would ask to have changed, as I am satisfied with my weight loss so far and have not yet hit a plateau. If I start to be able to eat more and then hit a plateau, I'll wish I had this back.

Eat more often.

My goal is 100 grams of Protein a day, so I eat four, five and sometimes six times a day to reach that target. And, I don't go to bed until I do.

Plan out your Snacks and meals, track your food, use Protein supplements in your fluids, set a reminder of you are forgetting to eat, and keep trying. It does get easier.

I am 3 weeks out and still eating under 300 calories.

I am looking forward to getting more in, but mostly am focusing on Protein and fluids.
It's still a challenge for me to get in 60 of each

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
