learning to eat/drink again

Recommended Posts

Hi All. I am 4 wks. post op. Just got the ok to advance to soft foods. I am still having trouble drinking let alone eating. Not sure what I am doing wrong but it feels like I always have something stuck and hurts for a few minutes. Should I be waiting so many seconds or minutes between sip and bites of food? I am a revised lap band patient so i am used to being able to drinking swigs of liquid. i am trying to take small sips, but it feels like it's just sitting down there and needs to come back up. I follow up with my surgeon Thursday, but could use some advice today.

Is this a lap band over a previous weight loss surgery ? If it is I am same situation . Just a week post surgery lap and over gastric bypass semi failed but 14 yrs ago had done .

I notice a change in volume of food but I am hungry at night and notice morning it's harder to drink and eat they told me they filled my lapnband a little up to 3 cc not sure what that means but I think I need more to control my self better but good news I am go finally down 16 lbs with preop diet included. I am dropping fast and I was up after hospital 8 lbs from fluids they gave me and anesthesia and drugs they pumped me up with . But why do I still have pains ? Is it normal I still need pain killers at end of day for pain. And I have a horrible sharp pain in my shoulder and blade that won't go away ( day s now. What can I do? I walk 10 blocks and around my house for now and do house work to stay some what active for now . I am still recovering but still have abdominal pain more at night

With drinking it is likely you are taking too much liquid in at one time. I remember how bad that hurts. Ugh!

The good news is, that will get better over time. You have to remember to take it very very slow and just sip. You will find the same Is True when starting with sift foods. You will need to make sure that whatever you are trying is pretty wet so it slides down. Take very small bites and chew like crazy.

I am 11 months post op and can drink a lot at one time now and I have to remind myself to chew like crazy because sometimes I still eat too fast and end up with that pain in my chest.

It can be hard to eat (and drink) after surgery. This should get better as your body heals. Remember to chew, chew, chew when you get into the solid stage. I found that softer foods (Soups and chili) went down smother than harder food such as steaks.

One of the men in our bariatric surgery support group meetings had a lapland revision to a

RNY gastric bypass because his band was eating into his stomach and had to be removed. Because of the scar tissue that had built up, his new pouch was a little smaller than most RNY patients. Therefore it was a little difficult for him at the beginning with the volume of food per meal. But he turned out well.

After a few rough days of trying to keep down food and take my Vitamins, I finally found out that I had a stricture. Spent all day at the clinic and ER and they sedated me and used a balloon to dilate the area that was narrowed. Don't know any other details than that but one I follow up with my surgeon tomorrow he will fill me in more. I can't tell you all the relief I feel now that he has gone in and stretched out the stricture. I am worried that I will continue to get one though. As if it's going to narrow again or something. Has anyone else had it fixed and did it come back?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
