Bad breath! Please help

Recommended Posts

Hey I had surgery 8/19 and I have noticed along with hubby that I have bad breath!!! I have started taking a toothbrush to work so I can brush my teeth at all time during the day!! I called the dr and he said bc I am losing weight that it is ketosis of the breath. . It is like my breath smells like Iron or like medicine!! Please someone tell me how to get rid of this bc I work in the public and I talk all day to everyone from patients to dr's to hospitial board members. Currently I have bags of soft peppermints that I suck on but sometimes I run out and I will have to rush to my office to get more bc I don't want to have bad breath!!!! Please someone help me. I go back to the dr on 9/3 for follow up.

There isn't much you can do other than trying to disguise it a little. Sugarfree mints and sugarfree gum will help somewhat, as will chewing parsley and drinking lots and lots of Water. Good luck!

Listerine strips work well.

Ketosis breath stinks but there's not a whole lot you can do about it but up your carb intake.

I had a bunch of GasX strips left over, so I used them for cat litter breath, too.

Yes, ketosis is fundamentally a result of one's diet being low in carbohydrates; it really isn't a result of losing weight as the OP's doc suggested - as you suggest, one can happily lose weight without the side effects by increasing carb intake. I never had any particular problem with these symptoms, but kept my diet relatively balanced (within our minimum Protein requirements and calorie limits). When my wife was going through this, she occasionally experienced these symptoms though she wasn't specifically on a low carb diet but occasional variations in her diet would drop her below her symptomatic threshold.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
