Nervous about Sleeve to RNY revision

Recommended Posts

So after the months of meeting insurance requirements, I have a tentative date of 10/7/15 for my RNY. My sleeve surgery was 10/1/12. I went into the sleeve so prepared mentally, physically and emotionally. I followed the rules post sleeve, exercised went to all NUT visits etc. I have had some unexpected complications post pregnancy that has lead me to thus revision. I am nervous about have another stomach surgery after 2 sections and a sleeve. The preparation for my first surgery (2 week liquid diet) was tough but I made it through. I am SO not looking forward to that! I had a really easy recovery time with my sleeve with no complications. I hoping for a similar outcome. I think it's the possible complications that scare me. It's the fact I have already altered my insides once! I am just talking out loud. But I wonder how others that have revised whether from lapband or sleeve have felt about having to go through a second surgery. How did you handle your apprehensions?

I haven't been through my first gastric surgery, but I just wanted to pass along something my good friend told me yesterday. She said it would be really weird if I wasn't nervous about the surgery. what does your doctor say? Does he think there is cause for concern going from the sleeve?

Possible complications really worry me too. That is what bothers me the most. Maybe someone can shed some light on how they handle that. It sounds like you had good results for a start with the sleeve.

My surgeon is very confident that a revision is possible and will be successful. I am confident in him. I am just nervous. All surgery comes with risk. My sleeve surgery was so successful as far as the recovery. I had a healthy pregnancy and my labs are perfect except low vit d. I am concerned about my overall health with the RNY.

@SleevenChica: You will do fine. I had my sleeve surgery in 2013 and a revision; RNY, just a month ago. For me, it feels totally different from the sleeve because with the sleeve I was able to do more in a short time. But I'm still getting used to the RNY. Good luck! :)

Thank you! Has the recovery been more difficult thank the sleeve? How long were you out of work?

@SleevenChica:

With my sleeve, I was out 3 weeks and felt great going back to work. With this surgery, I was out for 4 weeks. My stomach was hurting due to gas and Constipation ...which is something I'm still dealing with and I had my surgery on August 4. I have my days with being tired and fatigued, but other than that I am ok. :P

I am a band to rny co version. This surgery was a bit more difficult for me because it was a challenge to remove my band. My former surgeon sewed it on REALLY tight and lots of scar tissue. Also, the port removal incision was painful. The first month was tough and at the 3 month mark I had a stricture (complication) that was easily corrected with an endoscopy. My Protein levels were low during that time. But since having that fixed, it has been pretty smooth sailing! Not always easy adjusting to foods but it was COMPLETELY WORTH IT. I was nervous like you before surgery more than prior surgeries. I trusted my surgeon. I weigh 149 now, dance, am opening my own business! Life has changed drastically and I feel healthy and like I did in high school. So happy and grateful for the journey. You got this.

I had an excellent surgeon so that side everything went great. I was in the hospital 3 days with GB. I had more pain with this surgery than sleeve. I find it also took longer to recoup. At the 3 week mark I definitely feel better; I only had 2 weeks off of work wish I had 3 at least. From what I remember going to the next stage(purees)is more difficult now that with the sleeve. This is okay though as I am in no rush!!

I think you will do fine, no worries!

I am a sleeve to bypass revision as well. My surgery was last Wednesday, Sept. 23 and my sleeve was in March 2012. I had no problems with the sleeve, and no complications.

My sister did the same thing, sleeve and then revision to bypass. She warned me that the recovery for the bypass is harder, and to be honest, I have to say she was probably right.

The bypass is more major surgery in that they take something and reroute it. I mean I know that's obvious but.....it does make a difference. Having said that, I havne't had any complications, and I am not at all regretting having it done. There are a lot of things that are the same, the tiredness, etc.

I think you will do great, and the complications are just such a small percentage. My surgeon told me afterwards that he was expecting it to be much more difficult than it was, which was nice to hear. The surgery did take about three and a half hours.

I also am off work for two weeks, including the surgery. I still feel like Ike I just had major surgery, but I am sure I will be ready to go back in a week. Although most people do say take another week off if you can.

The other thing I have noticed....definitely still using my pain medication, but that is more for my incisions than anything. It just seems odd to me that I got on a flight home from Mexico two days after my last surgery, I totally cannot imagine doing that this time. It's just a different recovery.

I don't know if that helps? But that has been my experience so far. I think you had messaged me previously, so if you would like to chat more, just let me know. :)

@@Karen B45 Thank so much very your response. I have decided to take 3 weeks off. My surgeon said at least 2 so I figured 3 was a happy medium. I am nervous as my sleeve recovery was a breeze. My surgery is 10/21.

I am curious, why do people have to have a revision from sleeve to bypass? Should I be considering the bypass instead of the sleeve? Thx

Well I think that's something you have to decide for yourself. When i decided to have the sleeve, it was because it wasn't as major of a surgery, the recovery was shorter and less chance of complications. With a bypass as you know, they reroute your small intestine...which seemed like a really big deal to me. Well actually, still does.

My sleeve stretched. I basically got to the point where I could eat what I had been able to pre procedure. I had some medical problems which prevented exercising, and the weight was piling back on. Also, I had my surgery in Mexico so not any follow up or mental help for the mental hunger issues, and I just was not able to be successful.

The sleeve is great, and the success rate is really high. I just unfortunately am in the 30% that regain weight. But if it's a concern, I would really research which is best for you.

Good luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
