I have heard from some that not everyone needs to spend the night in the hospital. How many of you had to spend the night?

Hello KarenG, this is a pretty popular question, I had to stay overnight and was VERY glad I did. Pain control was taken care of and it was much easier to get in and out of my hospital bed than to get out of my bed at home.

Here's some links to many threads that ask your question, I hope you can glean some more information from them:

I stayed over due to insurance requirements, but even if I would of been self pay, I would of opted for it........

I was banded yesterday and I decided 'on the fly' to stay overnight. I didn't have intense pain, but I appreciated the time and space to tend to myself. I am self pay but there was no price difference.

Also, I had them give me an extra IV of fluids before I left - I wasn't able to get much Water down yesterday. That really helped me today I think.

I have to stay overnight because I live four hours away from where I am getting banded. They just want to make sure everything is okay for 24 hours after surgery.

My insurance actually required a 2 night stay. The first night I was grateful for, but the 2nd night was wayyyy too much for me. I couldnt stop thinking about my own bed, and my own pillows, and some peace and quiet!

My surgeon likes to keep you over one night and I was very thankful for that. I stayed in the PACU and was tended to by very caring nurses and the long night was made a little better by the morphine they offered me!! The other surgeon in the same hospital that does this surgery sends people home the same night if they "seem" okay to go home. I am glad I stayed. I was home by 10am the next day.

I was banded at 8am and home by 11 am. I am very happy I didn't have to stay anywhere. If you live far away from where you're having the surgery, that's a different story. I am also glad I never had any of the pain people talk about. I know everyone is different, and I feel badly that some people talk about being in so much pain from the surgery. I just felt like I had done some stomach crunches or sits ups.

I was just banded on Monday 7/2. My surgery was scheduled for 9am but didn't actually go into the OR until about 9:45. I left the surgery center at around 12:30 pm that afternoon and went home. I had the barium swallow right after waking up from surgery and then sat in a chair for little bit recovering and then got discharge instructions. I was in a lot of pain especially from the gas....I couldn't wait to get my pain med prescription. I still have a lot of gas and stomach pain/pressure and it is now been a week but every day is getting better.

I would HIGHLY reccomend spending the night in the hospital. My wife and I both had it done at the same time, and she ended up getting sick a couple times. When you are recooperating, you do NOT want to have 1) puke, or worse, 2) clean it up. Plus, the IV drugs really help a lot better for pain. Just let someone take care of you...

i Guess Everyone Is Different. I Am With Denise. I Had My Surgery At 2 P.m. Did The Barium Swallow, Sat For A While, Left The Center At 4:00, And Was Home An Hour Later. I Personally Am Glad I Did Not Have To Stay. There Is No Place Like Home, And I Couldn't Wait To Get Back.

I was actually glad I didn't stay in the hospital. I was in pre-op by 0620, surgery at 0730, and home by 1030. I wasn't in a whole lot of pain, just uncomfortable. Slept in a recliner for most of the day.

How difficult will it be to drive myself home? (I will be spending one night in the hospital).

:D It's only an hour drive, and I've never been married so I'm used to doing stuff like this for myself.

As long as you are definitely staying overnight you should be okay. I could have, but I was glad my daughter was present.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
