Pre-op medically supervised diet & weight question

Recommended Posts

My insurance used to require 3 months of physician supervised diet, but now they require 5 months. Usually when we start this process, we get weighed with a beginning weight. Then we get weighed each month under supervision. When we get to the end, which weight and BMI do they submit to insurance company? What happens if you lose weight to the point where your BMI is no longer 40? Can anyone help with this answer?

Almost all doctors use your starting weight and BMI to submit to the Insurance companies.

I understand it to be starting weight also; however, I have also read not to go under 40 BMI (or 35 with co-morbidities). I would ask the surgeon but I would bet they are going to submit whichever one they think will get you approved. :) Great weight loss pre-op by the way!! Keep up the good work!

They go by your starting weight . Your BMI can go below 40. They only look at your starting weight and that you lost what they wanted during the supervised diet

Thank you so much for all of your responses! It was very helpful :) I kinda thought they went by starting, but wasn't sure. Is there a set weight they require people to lose? I didn't ha e a requirement with my previous surgery and I don't have a requirement with this one either. I did set a goal of 5 pounds each month. That may be low, but I don't want to set unattainable or unrealistic goals since I currently have no restriction and relying on diet and exercise only. It is so much harder to lose weight at age 41 versus age 20!!!! Lol. Thankyou everyone, this forum is the best!!!

Yeah, and losing weight at 49 is harder than 41! ;) There's always a silver lining. :)

@@toasty I hear you! Lol I have heard that same thing. @@dannieeliza 15 pounds is very realistic. Congrats! I think the ins company just wants to see if a person can be compliant and show progress.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
