Post-op Cravings

Recommended Posts

I am five weeks post-op and I have been craving anything fresh, especially fruits and veggies. Even with Protein, I want fresh protein like organic chicken or something healthy like quinoa with raw nuts and veg or fruit. My taste buds really seem to have turned on anything processed. Anyone experience this?

I'm only two weeks post op and I already have this feeling as well! The thought of fried/chemically anything just seems completely unappetizing, whereas seeing clean recipes, fresh, organic food seems delicious and very appealing to me. I think it's the great reduction in sugar that everyone goes through pre and post op! Our bodies are no longer addicted to all the crap in a lot of our food so now we just see it as the toxic junk that it is. Congrats on your weight loss! :)

It is so weird how your taste changes after surgery. I used to love scrambled eggs....now the thought of them makes me ill....but an egg over easy is delicious. I crave fresh fruit and veggies instead of sweets...and the few times I've tried a sip of diet soda....we'll it's absolutely horrible tasting....can't believe I would drink two or three a day. And I hate plain water.....thank goodness for Crystal Light......

Craving fresh fruit and veggies and healthy food? I can't wait for that to happen! That's awesome! Now only if that would have happened back in 1983, I wouldn't be overweight haha!!!

I was at the same point around 5 weeks. I would dream of having a nice big salad. I would look at produce in the grocery store and want all of it. Really weird.

I went with a friend to Popeye's. I drank unsweetened iced tea while she ate a regular dinner. I took 1 tiny pinch of her biscuit and ate it. Within 5 minutes I felt horrible. My new stomach rejected it flat out. This pinch was barely a 1/4 inch big. Seems that my new tummy only wants high quality food and no junk. I think this is why you may crave fresh, healthy stuff. It is your stomach sending requests to your brain to go find better stuff.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
