I had the surgery 2 days ago and overall, I'm feeling pretty good. Sore belly and feeling kind of bloated but getting myself up and moving. Here's my question --- I lost about 11 pounds on the pre-surgery diet and I've eaten hardly anything in the last few days -- why does my scale say I'm 5 pounds heavier than my day of surgery weight??? I'm encouraged that I don't feel hungry --- but I'm discouraged by the scale! Has anyone experienced this?

i Did Experience The Same Thing. I Think Though That It Is From Being Bloated, And Maybe A Little Swollen. I Just Decided To Stay Away From The scale, As The First Month Is All About Recovering From The Surgery, and Giving Your Body That Time To Heal.

Thanks -- that's reassuring -- and makes sense. I think it's a good idea to avoid the scale for awhile - I can get obsessive! How are you feeling?

After surgery you hold fluids from the swelling that is internal and can last for a little bit. I would agree with not getting on the scale til you go for your first fill so you are not discouraged. Everyone in my support group has said the same thing about the weight going up or the scale not moving downward.

This reminds me of when I delivered my oldest child. I'm not kidding. I was retaining so much Fluid and was so swollen that I came home from the hospital weighing 2lbsmore than when I went in. My daughter weighed 7lbs 5 oz. Of course, as the swelling went away so did the weight. In 2 weeks I was down around 15lbs. I'll be banded later this month and with my luck, I'm fully expecting a similar experience. LOL. I hope your feeling well and have a quick recovery!

Yes, it is very disappointing. I was banded on Monday, 7/2 and I weighed myself on Friday and it showed that I had not lost any weight at all. I was really disappointed since all week long I have had nothing but Clear liquids...how can you not lose ANY weight on a Clear Liquids diet??? I am going to try not to weigh myself again until next week...hopefully by then the scale will decide to move some.

Sandra, it may not, but remember the first few weeks after surgery are not for losing weight, they are for healing, you body is hanging onto every calorie it can get to heal. It will go down eventually. Have faith!

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
