Mixed feelings re: getting rid of clothes

Recommended Posts

So yesterday I set out to buy a few tops. I'm buying very little, I was able to initially get by on clothes I had on hand that I had outgrown. I started at a size 26 and had clothes (pants mostly, hence the need for tops) through size 20.

Yesterday I tried on and fit size 16 top and 18 pants. I was amazed, and though I'm trying to be thrifty I realized it's time to let go of a lot of stuff. But when I go to my closet I'm apprehensive, not because I fear putting weight back on; but because I really invested money in quality clothes I'd feel good in. And I'm not willing to put out that same money now because I know I'm not done losing.

I know the time will come where I can fill in my wardrobe again. I just thought I'd be thrilled to get rid of stuff.

In buying new stuff I won't pay more than $20 for an item. clearance is my best friend. I can't wait till Black Friday... I'm going to shop till I drop that day! (A tradition for me)

I hear you. I had put together a collection of clothes that I really loved. I gave them all away to family (that way I still get to visit them - lol). I do a lot of shopping at Old Navy because it's cheap and cheerful. I recently joined a local clothes auction group on Facebook. You should look to see if there is one in your area.

I feel you on your struggles guru! I've gone down basically a clothing size and need to replace & discard. However, as I have lost a good amount of weight in the past (through WW) and regained it +, my issue is fear of gaining the weight back and not having clothes.

You might try one of those clothing rental websites (Gwynnie Bee has plus sizes, too), I'm thinking of trying that once I go down another size, especially because I don't want to buy an entire winter wardrobe that I may not be able to fit a year later.

It's funny how your head can mess with you after surgery. Congrats on the new size! Enjoy the excuse to shop for new clothing. If you have a shopping addiction now...It will be off the scale when you get to invest in clothing once you reach goal.

@@dhrguru . . . look for a recent thread I started on "How will I dress as a thin woman." People had some AMAZING suggestions.

I have taken a lot of clothes to the charity shop and some to the charity recycling which made me feel as if someone else would at least get the benefit of having them.

I had some really decent stuff and like you @@dhrguru I had really mixed feelings when sorting them out to give away. The sales are on at the moment though and I just bought 3 tops and one skirt to get me through the work week until I need smaller clothes. I work from home 2 days a week and usually wear casual clothes then.

I have gone from a 24 (USA 20) to an 18 (USA 14) in 7 weeks which is amazing. As its the end of the summer season here, I also bought 5 T shirts and 2 pairs of shorts for my holiday to Cuba at the end of the year. I bought them in a size 14 (USA10). My best friend who I went shopping with is a 14 and offered me her lovely smart summer dresses for the holiday too! An open invitation to raid her wardrobe before I go rather than to pay too much for clothes for a holiday, which I might never wear again. I could have hugged her to bits lol.

@@dhrguru Enjoy Black Friday ~ you really deserve it :D

I have an old navy cash that starts 9/8, I'll be checking them out then.

I tried selling clothes on twice, but some punk in my neighborhood stole the package out of my car before I got it to a mailbox. Haven't bothered since, I've just been sending them to goodwill.

There are a few thrift shops I'll look in. Problem is I end up with random pieces that don't make up an outfit. I do far better at places like Ross, Mr Marshall's, tj max, or clearance at Macy's.

Tailoring can be reasonable. I found one who , for $10 each , tailored 5 pair of my favorite pants. Kinda like I went shopping in my own closet.

I got rid of the huge clothes. Ok I kept one pair of stretchy 22's. Just to look at once a year and always remind me!

Hard to believe I wore that size now that I am many years banded,

Yet there they are .... I feel very grateful I was able to have a healthier smaller sized life for years...

One of the many joys of losing extreme weight is buying new clothes. Within around 6 months I went from a size 3X in shirts down to a size Small and from a size 46 in pants down to a size 33. I replaced my entire wardrobe. My wife is a seamstress and it was almost physically impossible to tailor my old clothes to fit. Not at those extremes. We boxed up my old clothes and looked for options. Because I spent a lot of money on the old clothes, I found homes for them with some of my family members and relatives. I spent a little on postage but they made it to good homes. The rest I donated to thrift stores.

Since my new size allowed me to shop at normal department stores and because I am a great bargain hunter, I had a field day shopping for new clothes. I was able to buy the latest fashion styles at relatively inexpensive prices. It was fun. After WLS there needs to be a little fun in your life. So it should never be ignored.

Have the things you really like tailored.

I think I will try this. I'm only looking to have some of my suit jackets tailored. they are expensive, even if I catch them on clearance.

I can always replace the pants-- most are too warn out to bother tailoring anyway.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
