Preop diet and severe headache

Recommended Posts

Good morning all,

I'm on day 2 of my preop diet and I've been having a major headache since yesterday. I suspect it's from not having my coffee in the morning. I guess I'm a total coffee addict! Any tricks to help out with this? Tylenol doesn't work. I've had some all day. I'm not hungry, just in pain!

When i start low carb high Protein or discontinue coffee I use that Excedrin Migraine. It has enough caffeine in it to help me pass day 3 then I generally don't need it. Are you drinking enough Water?

I've been keeping a bottle of Water and drinking all day. I'm practicing for postop ;)

I believe going cold turkey on caffeine and sugar is why this is happening. I will give the pills a try. I guess it's better now than after surgery to go through withdrawal.

I am really concerned about that when it is time for me to do it. I plan on weening off of caffeine slowly to avoid the headaches.

Wait....we have to give up our morning coffee? Is this true for everyone?

Every surgeon is different. Ask yours what their "you can no longer have" list is and it may not be permanent but a "you can't have until" thing ;)

My surgery will be in Dec/Jan and I started weaning myself off the high calorie Lattes a couple months ago down to 2 cups of regular coffee, down to 1 and now I am completely off of it! (Yay)

Still have a headache. :( I'm a little worried since I have an interview this afternoon.

I can't say I'm particularly hungry it's just this headache getting to me making me grumpy.

I can do this! I will stick to the plan and get over this third day. Things should get better after.

Thank you so much for your concern and your support!

I had headaches the first 4 days of the pre-op diet. I think it's because i wasn't drinking enough Water and I wasn't getting the sugar that my body was used to. By day 5, no more headaches!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
