Can I use something other than Unjury?

Recommended Posts

The nutritionist and nurses at my bariatric center told me that Unjury is the only type of Protein Powder I should use, because it's medically modified. They said that any other Protein I try, I won't absorb all of the protein in it because it's not medically modified. Has anyone else ever heard this? I'm so confused, because I see lots of WLS patients at other places using various types of protein. And I'm not that crazy about Unjury, really.

Sounds like they sell it and want you to buy it from them. Honestly there are so many different ones and my surgeon's office never told me that about Unjury.< /p>

Yea, I would bet that is because they get commission from selling it. You definitely have to watch the Protein grams, sugars, etc in choosing Protein, but I have never used unjury and my labs all came back great. I use Precision Engineering whey Protein Isolate (make sure it is Isolate), Premier Protein ready to drink shakes and Doc Hale's Whey-licious Unflavored. I seem to absorb all quite well and like the taste (as much as you can like Protein powder anyway).

My NUT told us that what you want to watch for is make sure you are getting whey Protein isolate, vs whey concentrate. They do sell unjury in their office but they said it's mostly b/c they can buy in bulk and we don't have to pay shipping that way. I haven't really compared their prices to getting it online b/c I like some other brands - specifically Isopure (zero or low carb - they do make a high carb one) and Syntrax nectar.

If you have a Vitamin Shoppe near you, they usually have single serving samples of several kinds so you can try them before investing in a big container.

Just watch the carbs if you try other brands.

Injury is one of MANY products. My WLS Centre had their own product I was required to be on 2 weeks prior to surgery. Eight months post surgery I'm on Satisfast PGX Whey Protein isolate and I love it.

Who knows what their kickback (?!)/ benefit is for pushing/iup-selling unjury. Maybe it IS the best on the market. Maybe they have contracted to only endorse that product.

It's your body and always your decision. Research and do your homework.

Bariatric Advantage is also "medical grade" or "nutriceatical"/"pharmaceutical" grade. So the issue is definitely whey Protein isolate vs concentrate and isolate is much higher quality. Isopure Protein (they have several kinds as mentioned above) is also isolate. I like BA and Isopure because they also come with a lot of Vitamins baked in. The other issue is that supplements are not as heavily regulated by the FDA as you might think. There are lots of supplements in the grocery store and drug store and GNC that list certain ingredients on the label, but in fact the supplement contains little to none of that ingredient when tested. Lots of ginseng supplements are actually just caffeine (ie very expensive considering that you can get same effect from cup of coffee). Many but not all of those brands sold by doctors like BA actually do get third party testing to verify the ingredients and nutritional content. I don't know if unjury does this or not, but if they do that may be why your doctor thinks it is superior. However, I am very leery of any "one size fits all" or "my way or the highway" thinking in general, especially when they are selling it. That being said my doctor does require all of his surgical patients to buy a starter pack of BA powders for the pre-op as well as a 2 week post op supply. I believe that is more just to make sure that you have some to at least get you started. But we are actually allowed to drink any brand we want, whenever we want as long as we are reaching our targets.

My NUT said I had to use New Direction the two weeks before surgery. It's only available thru doctor's offices and taste terrible! I quickly ordered from Unjury and it's such a welcome difference, I don't care what the NUT said. I'm sticking with it for after surgery too. Try a few supplements out there; you may decide Unjury, although not what you want forever, is better tasting than many of the options out there! And luckily it isn't forever! There is a light at the end of the tunnel ✨

I'm 9 days into my pre-op diet. My NUT also wanted me to exclusively use New Direction. I bought it from their store. I'm sick of it. Only 2 more days to go! I rather just drink broth if I could.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
