Stairs after surgery?

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone. I have a question about walking up and down stairs. Was this something that you could manage when you went home from the hospital? I am planning to move next month into an old city row house that has three floors and really steep stairs up to the second and third floor. Also, any thoughts on that first week after surgery when you live alone? Thanks so much for sharing your experiences, it really helps!

I live up more than 40 stairs and was able to climb them less than two days after surgery with no problem. Of course I took my time but it wasn't a big deal nor were subsequent ups and downs.

I found recovery a lot harder than I expected, honestly. Lots of sleep and more pain than I expected however it's quickly in the past and I'm so happy with my sleeve I barely remember the hard times (but my hubby reminds me!)

Everyone is different, so it's hard to know. I just focused on the liquids, Protein and giving myself time to heal. Best of luck to you!

Hey there! I went home alone and was fine. I was able to do stairs, but felt a little "winded" after. I took it slow, but it wasn't an issue. I was in decent shape beforehand (stairs were easy). As far as being alone, I made sure that I had all my Vitamins and meds that I needed before I went into the hospital (or get it from the hospital pharmacy - rx for pain med). I wrote down when I did things like take meds, vitamins, Water, etc. Just to help in case I was groggy.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
