Stupid things people say when they find out you've had surgery....

Recommended Posts

I'm two years out, the other day I was talking to the librarian of the school I work at about having pictures taken. I told him that Before I lost weight I hated having my picture taken, but now I don't mind. He said" what you've lost weight?" I said " 100 pounds !" He said what? "I don't remember you being fat!" I had to say thank you and try not to laugh.

My son's grandfather said "i would guess you've lost at least 12 pounds"... when I had lost 100 and hadn't seen him the whole time. I just said "yep! More than 12 is correct!"

From my sister pre-op when I told her I was doing this to control my BP & help avoid the inevitable heart attack with heart disease on both sides of my family:

"I'll just have to be fat & if I have a heart attack then I have life insurance & they can bury me."

O_o

From one of my partners: "No fair...this is so much easier for you than my diet. You're totally going to pass me I. Weight loss and I'll be jealous." :(

From the sister at 2 months post op and 30 lbs down "Have you lost any weight? I don't really see it in your face?"

The thing that hurts me the most is when someone says "you look the same!"

I can't help but get hurt because I've lost 176lbs. I sure as fuck don't look the same.

Stop being so PC and tell me I used to look like a whale and now I look great.

The "you've always looked beautiful" shit is fine an alll like I get the whole body positively thing... but I was positive I didn't want to look like I did before.

Grrrrr

Only my husband knows for these very reasons. But he can be dense to. Like for three weeks i tried to show him the diet i will be on after surgery. I kept showing him graphs and dr notes and literature and each time he zoned out and watched tv. Then he comes in as I am going to bed and says like he is Einstein. "You know you just can't order out and eat anything you want." Oh really because the doctors, nutritionist and psychologists I have been seeing for months says i can magically eat anything and it will float away.

I have a few friends that are not as heavy as I am ..they are always sabotaging my weight loss . They ask me if I want to order something for lunch I said no thank you I'm in my pre ops diet since surgery is on the 20 of Oct. Every few min it's you can't have just a little..or they eat stuff in your face while saying how great it is .they have never done that before.

I opted out of telling my family about surgery because of all the negativity ..even if everything went well and maintained my weight they will still have something negative to say and talk behind my back ..

Said to me by a Take Shape for Life/Medifast rep after I repeatedly declined and finally told them I had bariatric surgery and don't need their product: "Oh, that's too bad that we didn't get to you first".

My friend is a take shape coach. She was reluctant to accept my decision at first. Although their products may have helped me. I was tired of the loose gain roller coaster. We are weight loss buddies though just doing different programs

The dumbest thing told to me was, "but you won't be able to sit down and have a good meal, I mean a good meal, you will only be able to eat a little bit."

OMG!!! I am loving this post. I'm waiting for insurance approval. I guess I'll get some of this comments when I start the pre-op diet.

My eating buddy switched topics when I told her. The only comment I ever got was to let her know I made it thru surgery.

Hubby is great, he supports me. Even to the extent that he told me that my pre-op was going so great, maybe I don't need it anymore?

My blabber mouth Mom who always wants to make sure she weighs less than me just knows I'm on a diet.

My skinny assistant was happy, because now she got a weight loss buddy?!?

All the extra check ups I had to do with my regular drs went really well. Everyone were so supportive.

I thought I would share my wls with everyone, but it will be limited to those people who really have an interest. But I won't lie if someone asks. Maybe some snarky answers would be good to have as a back up for ignorant ppl...

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
