Stupid things people say when they find out you've had surgery....

So true!

I kept my surgery to myself except for my husband, sister, and 2 good friends, one of which was also have the surgery.

I did not care or need the comments people would offer regardless if I have asked their opinion, before or after the surgery. And when people say "you've lost weight" I say "well, I do what I can" or "sure trying to" or the even "its a struggle".

The people who know see me working my butt off literally, and the people who don't know, well they see me working my butt off literally.

ive been kinda thinking up stuff to tell people when they see me losing after my surgery. havent decided to the truth or just say i diet/exercise.

I have a friend that lost 110 pounds through diet and exercise. She had a lower body lift and fat added to her butt and scheduled for her inner thighs, arms and breast implants.

With all of that her surgeon said to the other surgeon, "so proud of her she lost all her weight the right way". Wow really? You are literally chopping her up but using the sleeve as a tool is the "wrong way"? smh, I am still pursuing what I believe is right for me.

my plan is to be honest but vague. Something along the lines of "thanks, hard work and great tools". But I'm sure I'll put my foot in it at some point. I'm still pre-surgery!

My first surgery was cancelled because the surgeon was sick. When I told my bff that it was canceled, she said it was the answer to HER prayers and that it was a sign from God that I wasn't supposed to have the surgery. Needless to say I did not tell her when the surgery was rescheduled. That friendship is basically kaput now.

Oh man.

Met this guy online. Really liked him.

He keeps texting me about various health problems he has though... And I'm thinking... Weird? Anyway I mention I have trouble with digestion. He asks me for Details so I say something vague.

He then goes- "so what your saying is you were a fatty and had your stomach stapled?"

I freeze. I'm thinking, omg how does he know! So I reply that yes, that's pretty much it.

And he's in shock. I guess he was kidding! Haha right?

So I explain most people are very shocked when I tell them because I'm so little now. They can't picture me overweight.

He replies "are they shocked by how small you are or by the inevitable revealing of your skin folds?"

I cried for 20 minutes and blocked his phone number.

OMG!!! Well that's new... I'm sorry he was such an ass. It actually sounds like he knows a lil more than the typical person on the outside-as in he's had it done too or at the very least he's looked into it.

My favorite is the insinuation that having bariatric surgery is "taking the easy way out". Until someone actually goes through this process, they have no idea just how hard it really is!

I know! It's like you cheated on a test.

I've had that said to me a couple times my response is well when you personally have this procedure and lived with it for a while we can re visit this remark and you can tell me exactly what you think is so easy about it ... No further comment was made ... To my face anyway

I had a physical with my primary for the first time since surgery. She was super impressed with my weightloss. The two things that made me want to strangle her:

1. "You must be so happy to not have to shop in special fat people stores now, that had to be so embarrassing"

2. Your boyfriend must be so happy you're getting skinny

Wanted to slap the woman.

People saying something to the effect "you took the easy way out" seems to be fairly common.

It possibly may be incorrectly perceived as simple in their minds, just have your stomach and/or intestines surgically altered; but it definitely isn't an easy process and it requires a lifetime commitment.

Bull riding is simple, all you need to do is stay on the bull for 8 seconds. That is definitely not easy either!

1.) "Wow. I can't believe you've lost over 100 lbs. Your face doesn't look old and wrinkled at all!" ???? Uh...thanks? I think?

2.) "My friend had gastric bypass done. She gained all her weight back." ???? I'm not your friend.

3.) My husband says, "You're going to leave me now that you're hot and skinny." ???? How does the number on the scale change my marriage vows?

I've heard about so many 'friends' who've gained all the weight back. It's aggregating.

My fiancé says the same thing. It drives me nuts. My weight has nothing to do with my love for him. Why do they always think those are related. :(

I get the one about people almost thinking I was fat enough all the time. It makes me laugh. I'm tall and my BMI at surgery date was 35.5. I simply tell them that I appreciate their kind words, but that I met medical criteria for having the surgery. Not only was my BMI high enough, but I also have apnea and high triglycerides. I also watched my father almost die from obesity related conditions in the past year, so I'm choosing a different path.

The comments in this thread make me sad and angry. But unfortunately I too can relate. My BFF isn't being very supportive at all, with the usual "Why can't you just diet and workout?" "Come to the gym more with me, that'll fix you right up!" or "I don't think you need to do this." It's awful to say, but she is only about 50 lbs lighter than I am, and I have a feeling she is trying to discourage me from getting the sleeve because she doesn't want to be the "fat" one. I try to steer conversation away from that topic now. It will be interesting to see what happens with the friendship post surgery.

I'm lucky though that my parents, my husband, my bother, my daughter, my gym coach, and two other friends are being very supportive.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
