I figured they would explain in the hospital but they really didnt.. just gave me boost and ice chips and that was it. How much am i suppose to be eating and of what? Am i only suppose to be drinking from the Protein shakes? What about Peanut Butter, or oatmeal, or yogurt, Soup? So confused.

My surgery was also on the 24th. During my 6 month prep post op diet was discussed a lot. My surgeon has me on Clear Liquids until I see him on Tuesday. Then I should be able to advance to full liquids for two weeks, then purree food for two weeks before introducing soft foods. I would call the surgeons office and ask what protocol they use, or you can call your nutritionist. Good luck!

My surgery was on the 25th and I am on the same diet ad Gail mentioned. It was also stressed that you get enough Water in. Sipping all day. There weren't any limits to amounts. I was on clear liquids until today and I added Protein Shakes. Hope this helps.

See I was given the Protein shake while in hospital. But typically it should just be liquids right now? I have an appointment monday so I will talk to them then just wondering for the mean time.

Protein shake is considered liquid. That is why they gave it to you at the hospital.

You could have 2 Protein shakes of 30g of Protein a day, and add beef or chicken bouillon, sugarfree Jello.

Lots of Water.

This should take you to Monday, good luck. My surgery was on the 18th, I am doing excellent.

I had surgery yesterday and was on only ice chips until today. I am allowed one Protein Shake a day (2 ounces at a time) and all the Water I want. No broth or Jello, my surgeon believes it will make me hungry.

Definitely you need to talk to your doctor/nutritionist. To give you an example list, here's the stuff I was told was allowed for the Full Liquids diet (after returning from the hospital):

Clear Liquids 3-4 cups daily (Water, Crystal Light, fat-free chicken/beef/vegetable broth, propel zero, Powerade zero, sugar-free Jello, sugar-free popsicles)

Full Liquids 3-4 cups daily or more (Protein shakes, nonfat/1% milk, low-fat or fat-free Lactade milk, soy milk, almond milk, plain nonfat yogurt, plain nonfat greek yogurt)

You can flavor yogurt with crystal light or sugar-free Jello powder.

Add Protein Powder to above liquids to boost Protein levels.

Protein drinks should be <200cal, >15g protein, <5g sugar, <5g total fat.

As I said, this is just a temporary list to tide you over until you speak with your doctor/nutritionist. I can't stress enough that they should be the ones to tell you exactly what you should be eating.

Just a thought: did the hospital give you a phone number of a nurse or someone else to call if there is a problem? If so, you might want to call them and ask them.

Can anyone tell me what their Dr. has told them in reference to "long term" diet? After you heal up from surgery, and are no longer restricted to the Clear liquids, then full liquids only....After the puree foods only, then the soft foods only, dietary steps, once you get moved to regular solid foods, then what foods can you eat? I have heard someone say that you can never have real sugar, nor can you ever have any sugar substitutes either. Is this actually the diet restrictions?

Also, are there any foods that you can never eat again? Glutens, wheat, seeds or nuts, fibrous foods, etc.? Can you still eat breads, cheese, have a small piece of my grandbaby's birthday cake or ice cream?

Thanks

Tirtzah

Again, doctors may differ but my main rule is no white sugar no white flour (per my doc and nut).

Seeds and nuts are fine in small amounts. Should avoid breads (though sometimes Ezekiel bread is ok). Reduced fat cheese is ok in small amounts.

Can you have a small piece of birthday cake or ice cream? Well, the true answer is no you shouldn't. But will you and have others? Probably. But it is best to not have any. Once you do, it almost seems that you give yourself permission to do it again and the amounts get larger and pretty soon, you are back to old habits. I'm not saying don't, I'm saying you shouldn't. But I'm also putting my own inability to control myself onto you! lol. Sorry.

Things you can have:

chicken

Turkey

seafood

edamame

eggs

yogurt (especially fat free greek yogurt. The new recommendation is Oikos Triple Zero in black container)

Fat free cottage cheese

veggies (once your body accepts them anyway)

fruit (no more than 2 small servings / day once your body is ready to have them)

seeds and nuts

lean beef and pork though chicken and turkey are better

chili

tofu

lot's of Water

Things to avoid:

I can't remember the whole list but I think it's...

carbonated beverages

anything deep fried or fried

Chinese food

white sugar

white flour

rice

Pasta

pizza (though I do have some but only eat the toppings. I am going to try the cauliflour crust pizza soon)

Cookies

crackers

candy

cakes

donuts

muffins

you get the picture!

Note that neither list is complete, just the things I thought of off the top of my head.

It's hard and I'm doing horribly lately and have been eating from the bad list. Don't do this! Don't even start doing this!! It really sends you down a bad rabbit hole.

I highly recommend going to eggfaces blog to get ideas of what to eat. If you search on "the world according to eggface" you should find her pretty easily!

Best of luck.

Did you not have a NUT (nutritionist) prior to surgery? If not, you need to find one ASAP. There are a lot of different stages and each dr / NUT is different. It concerns me that your dr wouldn't give you a book or instruction on what to eat. Most say liquids for the first week or 2, then pureeds for 2 to 4 weeks, then slowly on to solids.

Wow, I can't believe your Weight Loss Surgery team would give you the surgery and then release you without telling you what your post-op diet should be. That seems pretty terrible of the surgical staff and NUT.

I just had surgery on the 25th, so we're in a similar boat. If it helps, I can tell you what my NUT ordered for me:

Stage 2 Diet

Protein Shakes & Calorie-Free Liquids

Daily diet will be ~900 calories, and 100+ grams of Protein.< /p>

Primary goal is to drink 48-64oz (or more) of Water and other calorie free and non-caffeinated fluids every day. Other goal is to drink 2oz of protein supplement every hour for a total of ~32oz per day (approx. 4 protein shakes).

For Protein Shakes, use egg white, soy, or milk isolate (do not use a blend or concentrate). Be sure to mix with 1% lactose free milk or unsweetened soy milk (do not mix with water).

Examples of the 64oz of hydrating fluids:

Water, Crystal Light, Powerade Zero, sugar-free Koolaid, Decaf coffee, chicken and Beef broth, Pho broth, Unsweetened, decaffeinated herbal or black tea, etc.

Examples of liquids to AVOID: yogurt, Tomato Soup, cream Soup, pudding, Jell-O, V-8, juicing your own juice or pureed items.

Example schedule of daily intake (2oz liquid Protein supplement every hour for 16 hours per day = 32oz per day):

8am - 2oz protein

8:15am-9am - 4-6+oz hydrating fluids

9am - 2oz protein

9:15am-10am - 4-6+oz hydrating fluids

10am - 2oz protein

10:15am-11am - 4-6+oz hydrating

... etc.

Hope this helps, but please reach out to your personal NUT and demand they tell you what your post-op diet should be!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
