Congrats, it's an ulcer!

Recommended Posts

So I had an EGD this morning because they thought I had a stricture, 6 weeks post-op. No stricture, which is great, but I have an ulcer, and possibly a hiatal hernia. I say possibly because the doc didn't tell my husband about that, but it's on the paperwork they gave him. So who knows. I'm also dealing with a nonfunctioning gallbladder that's started making me nauseated 24-7. So it's not been a great few weeks.

I'm posting here because I literally haven't been able to get answers from any doctor or nurse. My surgeon's office closed right as I got out of the hospital, and a message for the "on-call" doc ended up with the office receptionist calling me back. So no help from anyone until Monday. I just don't know how this will affect how I need to eat? Does anyone have any experience with this? I'd appreciate it!

You have to keep hydrated. If you are continually sick, you need to go to the ER so you can get an IV in and prevent dehydratation. It can be pretty serious,

Try some Water, see if you can swallow a gravol. If that does not work, you should go to the ER,

An ulcer can be a really serious post-op complication! I am sorry you are part of the small percent to experience that!

Hopefully you are on something to prevent stomach acid?

I would encourage you to stay hydrated. You need medical direction not advice from us, but if you don't feel it warrants returning to the ER... consider giving your gut a rest with just liquids (clear or full) over the weekend. If you can tolerate Protein drinks.... all the better.

Don't be afraid to return to the ER if you can't keep things down or you have too much pain. It's a hassle, but you need sound medical care.

Gallbladder issues are not uncommon with people losing large amounts of weight, but it just sucks.

It will eventually be worth it, but what a rough start! I'm sorry. Please let us know how it goes this weekend.

6 weeks after bypass, my post-op nurse thought I too ad a stricture and encouraged me to drink warm lemonade to help digestion. An endoscopy showed that my suture lines were ulcerated and acids like lemonade were the worst thing I could have done. I had a Picc line placed 6 weeks ago and have not taken anything by mouth since, Another endoscopy will be scheduled for the end of September. Hoping for healing, so that I can learn to start eating again .Best of luck to you on your journey.

I don't have any advice but just wanted to say so sorry you are going through this - especially the 2 big things at once. I also had EGD today (12 weeks post-op) and they found a VERY tight stricture. Not sure how I was able to eat what I was able to eat (until these last 3 days where I couldn't keep anything down). I did want to say hydration is very important. (I have to stay on a liquid diet for a week but mine is not the same as yours.) I am using my medicine cup again and setting my timer to take a small sip every 5 minutes to make sure I get at least 4 ounces in per hour. I am getting in more than that but that is minimum. The rare times I forgot to set my timer, I would forget to drink and it would be 30 minutes later without a sip. I hope you get answers soon!

Thanks everyone for the advice and sympathy! I never thought I'd be one of the people who dealt with post-op issues. But oh well. :) I'm sticking with pretty much just Water today, and soft, bland food when I eat. This constant nausea is the worst part. Gotta get rid of this stupid gallbladder! Much as I don't want another surgery, I also don't want to be miserable like this all the time.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
