I’m still on a post-op liquid diet (stage two) but I am anticipating the next stage when I’ll be able to eat pureed foods. I am a retired chef and plan to make many of these foods myself. Everything I read about post op diets say that fat is a no-no. Is there a reason for this other that fats are high in calories? What about good fats like olive or coconut oil, Peanut Butter, avocados etc.? Even some of the most recent research indicates that saturated animal fats might be good for us. It’s the trans fats that are unhealthy. Do fats negatively affect the digestive process in post-op bypass patients?

It's not so much that fats are bad. Too much fat and/or sugar can cause dumping syndrome. Dumping syndrome is generally not a great experience. I personally seem to tolerate a moderate amount of fat, but sugars make me sick. We should all try to achieve a low fat gram percentage post op. I try to follow my gall bladder postop recommendations and shoot for 16grams or lower fats. Ask your dietician what you are expected to achieve.

My binder has guidelines for each food group. Under Fats it says less than 3 servings a day.. 2tbsp of avocado, 1 tsp olive oil, 1tsp butter, 1tbsp sour cream,1tbsp low calorie Salad Dressing, 1tsp mayo and it also says use light or fat free versions when possible.. Peanut Butter is listed in the Protein section in my guidelines no more than 2tbsp is a serving of peanut butter

After RNY gastric bypass surgery, the part of the stomach that processes fats and sugars is cut aside. Therefore if you consume moderate amounts of fats or sugars it automatically leads to dumping syndrome. After about a year, your body physically changes and your intestines evolve to process fats and sugars. At that stage you will be able to consume fats and sugars without dumping syndrome.

From my perspective and all the research that I have seen, all fats are good fats.

If I have too much fat I dump. In small amounts I can tolerate avocado though. Also coconut and olive oil.

A bit of fat has been fine for me. However I had been eating Peanut Butter on occasion and have been ok-yesterday had some (just peanut butter by itself) and got very sick a half hour later. Won't be eating it again for long time!!

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
