Drinking from a straw

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Silly question, but when is it ok to drink from a straw?

My doctor said that drinking from a straw introduces air into the pouch, which is a bad thing. He indicated I should never drink from a straw after the surgery.

I asked my doctor and he said if the air didn't bother me, it didn't bother him.

My doctor said the same as @aelovelady. I find using a straw really helps me get my fluids in and I am not having any problems with the air/bloating etc. I am 4.5 months and started using a straw around 6 weeks.

I am a HUGE straw drinker, so the last time I met with my surgeon (about 8 weeks post op), I asked and he said not quite yet. I was thrilled to know that I will be able to use a straw again, in the very near future!

I drink through straws every single day. I've walked into my surgeon's office drinking through a straw and he didn't bat an eye, even though in all the pre-op classes we were told "no straws." I find it so much easier to get my fluids in with a straw and I actually find I take in more air when I just drink out of a glass

Thanks guys! I'm with Stacey. Whenever I drink from a cup or bottle it seems I get, and I wanted to try drinking from a straw but a little hesitant.

OK I have been drinking from a straw however my Dr office told me yesterday not too - puts air in my stomach. But do we know how that is a bad thing? I mean it doesn't seem to cause me to sip too much or give me gas. Having just had a stricture though and being a stern rule follower, I am trying to figure out if this is just nonsense and Ok to not follow or if there is real credence to it. I find I get in much more Fluid if I use a straw. I know this seems a silly thing to be struggling with but I swear it is really bugging me - more than not getting soda (which I will strictly follow). Any thoughts?

My doctor said it was fine.

If you start not following your doctor's instructions, you are headed for a slippery slope. Best results come from following their instructions, or you will have nobody but yourself to blame if things go poorly.

Those that are told they can, fine. Those that are told don't, shouldn't.

My $0.02.

I've been drinking through a straw since day one. I've always used a straw and the thought of not using a straw is alien to me.

Mine said after 3 months - give the pouch time to heal first. After that, perfectly fine.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
