Advice about which surgery

Recommended Posts

My insurance approved me for surgery. I want to choose the best surgery. My doctor would like me to lose 100lbs. I want to know which surgery is healthier. I only get two choices and that is the gastric sleeve or the gastric bypass is. I've done so much research and I just can't make up my mind. Help?!?!

Those are the same two choices I had as the surgeons I am considering will not do bands.

I need and want to lose 200 lbs.

I have issues with reflux and was told the sleeve would magnify this hugely.

Both surgeons stated that bypass would be my best choice and impact the comorbidities very well.

You must take your medical history into account. As @@Dub mentioned a history of reflux/gerd should push you to the bypass as the sleeve can both make it worse and in some cases give you reflux.

Both surgeries are equally invasive and life changing. The risks are of course a bit different so you need to come to terms with the level of risk you are comfortable with given your own medical history. Your doctor should make a recommendation in partnership with you.

I would not let the 100lb weight loss be the thing that makes your decision, you should be able to lose that much weight with either option if you follow the plan.

I too wasn't sure which surgery to get so I asked my surgeon if it was his decision which he would choose for me. I ended up going with his suggestion after a big discussion with the people closest to me. He would have done whichever I chose.

I'd encourage you to follow the advice of a surgeon who does both surgeries, has a good reputation, and has reviewed your medical history.

In general: The gastric bypass is usually the best choice for people with diabetes and/or gastric reflux.

A male friend was told by my very reputable surgeon that he would not do a gastric bypass on him because he loves to workout with weights. The surgeon said that he would do better with a sleeve so that he could keep up with his Protein absorption while working out.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
