Post Op Diet - How did you handle this? were you afraid?

Recommended Posts

I am getting nervous about my surgery (I don't have a date yet) and the ensuing diet. How are you able to eat so little immediately after ? What are some things you did to help you through the first month post op - basically during the liquid and mushy stages. Were any of you afraid you wouldn't be able to handle it leading up to your surgery?

I was on liquids for a month and then purees for a month. No, it wasn't hard to eat so little. I wasn't terribly interested in food or hungry. I had an excellent plan from my medical team about what I was allowed to eat and when and how much. All I worried about was following my plan, getting in my liquids and Protein. I never felt deprived.

I know it is hard to believe looking at it from the other side -- but tons of us get through this just fine.

And after four weeks of liquids, a couple of tablespoons of pureed tuna salad is delicious and nourishing and all that you need. Really!

I didn't want to eat at all after my surgery so eating very little wasn't a problem. I didn't even get my hunger back until after about 4 months. You'll do just fine :-)

I was terrified, but it wound up not being an issue. Mentally I kept obsessing over the idea that I'd end up with hypoglycemia and not be able to do anything about it, but it never happened (at least until I got back to the gym, and by then I COULD grab something).

It seems like such an insurmountable change to make when you're pre-op and still have a bigger capacity, but afterwards it's not such a huge issue :).

Good luck, and I hope you get your date soon!

I worry about a bunch of these things too.

I hope that I can stay strong, and find stuff I enjoy, I hope I don't get sick.

Today is my bad day, I just wish the entire day was over.

I didn't have a full month post-op of liquids and mushy foods. My surgeon doesn't do that - he wants people on real solid foods as soon as possible.

I was on liquids for 8 days, soft foods for 2 and then went to real food on day 10. But even now the hunger isn't there at all. I eat my meals but honestly I could care less whether I do or not.

Best part is that after 3 months out from surgery I am totally free of all prescription meds. I had taken high blood pressure medication for 34 years. I gave it up on Monday.

Hockeyfan, that is WONDERFUL..................

What an inspiration to each of us.

I am so hoping my body stops hurting and aching. I know I have medical issues to address because of an auto accident, but the thyroid meds, the high blood pressure, the Cpap machine, the meds to sleep because my body can't relax. I SO want to be done with it all.

Congrats on all you have accomplished and great name!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
