Hey Shotochick?? I'm a bit nervous TBH. Not about the lifelong change - bring it on! Just surviving the surgery with no complications. I'm a nurse and know all the worse case scenarios!!

You're very brave already if you've transitioned to living overseas. Do the ones at home know you're doing this?

I have told a few friends and close family back home, and friends here face to face (mostly) so that I could answer their questions. Having knowlege can be dangerous - but you have decided to go ahead regardless of what you know already wich makes you really brave as well!

I figure that by letting my friends and family know they will make sure I stay accountable. I am also blogging the journey - http://aussiefoodiesjourney.blogspot.co.uk/

Where in Oz are you?

I'm in Sydney too! I'll check out your blog.

What's your pre-diet look like? Seems to be different around the world! Did you have to go through lots of pre appointments?

I was on the smaller side and was 93 kgs on the day of surgery. I have lost 16 kgs which I am very impressed with! I am about halfway there. Energy was an issue. I went back to my desk job after a week and I am just now feeling as if my energy is back. I had to change my mindset to think les energy, more weight loss!

Thanks for the comments about the blog!

Pre-op is 2 weeks minimal calories. I have 4 options:

  1. liquid Diet: milk, yoghurt + all i can drink coffee, tea, Water, sugar free drinks
  2. Limited Meals - about 600-800 cals a day, Protein focussed minimal carbs
  3. Really strict Meal options which include cucumber and i hate cucumber with a burning passion
  4. Slimfast shakes

I have gone for option 2 for when my pre-op diet starts next Friday. May switch to Option 4 for the second week.

48 hours pre-surgery I have to switch to Clear liquids only. Then fasting for 24 hours before the op.

I have gone private rather than through the NHS (UK version of Medicare), so will have a room to myself at the hospital. Also have a nutritionist and counsellor available through the surgeon.

Thanks all for info - especially those who have gone before. I've had 2 weeks of pre-op with 3 Meal Replacements per day with veggies only. I had two cheats one whole day and one packet of chips. I was wondering if I should be fluids only today - my surgery is Friday - it's Weds night but I just had a stuffed mushroom.

And no one said fast for 24 hours. That would start in the am

I was in hospital for three nights...Wed-Sat

Then off work for a week...

I could have gone back to work on the Monday (desk job) but took the extra week to be certain...

Maybe I was lucky but I had NO pain, NO discomfort and NO issues regarding the surgery...

I was in hospital two nights, Tuesday and Wednesday and went back to desk job a week later. I had no pain but was tired.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
