2 weeks... it was hell! But sooooo worth it in the end.

My program was 2 weeks as well! The first couple of days are tough, but then I was SO surprised. I didn't know where my hunger went. It was non-existent. Also, it helps to understand why the diet is important. I'm sure you have heard that it makes surgery technically easier for your team. It also reduces complications with your liver!

My surgeon did not require any kind of preop diet other than two days of Clear liquids before surgery. I put myself on about a week of a Protein shake diet, with a small high Protein meal twice during that time.

Mine was 7 days. First 3 days are the worst. U have to just power thru. Swanson's Mexican Tortilla broth was a life saver for me!

I was on a 10 day luiquid only diet. The life saver for me was really excellent chicken broth. I sipped it like crazy and it got rid of the taste from the all the cloyingly sweet Protein Shakes.< /p>

I was getting really anxious all day long reading about pre op diets. My surgeon doesn't require one except fasting the night before. I'm going to start a diet based on the reviews I have seen on here. My surgery date is 9/1, less than a week away!!!

My doctor requires a 5-day pre-op liquid diet, but I have decided to do 10 days pre-op. I start Tuesday. I love the suggestions for making it easier to get through, keep them coming!

Mine was 2 weeks. I lost 18 lbs! If I remember correctly it was 4 shakes and 2 Protein Bars a day. My drs office uses the Bariatric Advantage brand shakes and bars, the shakes aren't too bad if you blend them with ice. And we were supposed to have a small banana every day, so I would add a frozen banana to my "breakfast shake" and it would turn out very tasty. I would probably keep up with the powdered shakes if I hadn't gotten lazy and realized the ease of the ready to drink ones:)

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
