Hi Betty!

I looked into Dr. Simpson. I had a first appt. and went to the seminar with him. I also looked into two other places before deciding where to have the surgery.

Are you a cash pay patient?

This is a major decision. Before you decide on a surgeon, I would suggest checking out several. There is a difference in quality.

Good luck with your search. If you have any other questions, please ask!

Shauna

Dr. Simpson is okay, meaning he's a safe surgeon and all but it's unlikely you'll ever see him again after surgery. His staff will take over fills, etc. At least that is what I hear.

I thought about going to him but I couldn't STAND a person that worked for him. She was let go shortly after I had surgery in Mexico.

I too interviewed with Simpson. First impressions of him were OK. He took his time answering all of my questions, but I was not completely thrilled with his dog licking my leg throught the entire interview, which he seemed oblivious to. Anyway, I interviewed two other surgeons and decided to go with the team of Dr.s Orris and De Barros. It was a much farther drive for me but they are excellent surgeons and I liked the idea of having two surgeons in my surgery with me. That gave me a deeper sense of confidence. I was banded in the end of April and have lost 32 lbs and am 1/2 way to my goal weight. One of the surgeons does the fills for you and they have an ultra sound machine so needle placement is accurate the first time. They are also quite personable and likeable.

Good luck with your search for the doc or docs that are rihgt for you.

What pretesting did you need to have done before the surgery with Dr Deborris and Dr Orris? I have been getting a lot of testing done here in Iowa so that I can get the surgery done when I move to Arizona in Oct. I have had a sleep study done, colonoscopy, EGD, and I'm doing a 6 month supervised diet with my doctor and a nutritionist so my insurance will cover the surgery. I have mixed sleep apnea, high blood pressure and high cholesterol and joint pain. I have a BMI of 40. I also went for a psych eval and got a clearance for surgery. My doctor also will refer me for the surgery as well as my pulmonary doctor. I'm on a cpap machine for the apnea. Do you think I will need anymore tests done before surgery. I know I will have to meet with their nutritionist too. I want to have this surgery in Oct or Nov. I'm so ready to start this journey to a healthier life style. Any info you can give me I would appreciate, Diane

Had Dr Simpson for my lapband surgery. He has been excellent. I had been sent home too early from the hospital, (hospital's fault) and had to go back to spend the night at the hospital. He was up half of the night on the phone with the hospital checking on me and was there first thing in the morning. Since then he has done both of my check-ups and he personally did my fill. He can sometimes come off as a bit cavalier, but I am quickly understanding his dry sense of humor, as I have one too. He has always listened and answered any and all my questions, stupid or not. Hope that answered some of your questions...

(p.s. I love the fact that he has a therapy dog on premises. anyone that loves animals is good w/me; ) Diego is friendly. but not obnoxious...)

I too went to Orris and DeBarros and you have had everything done they require. Good for you! I can't see one thing you left out. Oh maybe the well woman check. The regular mamo and pap. That is it!

Keep us posted! We have a great group here and the Weight Loss Institute of Arizona has a support group that started on Saturdays. They also have a group that meets on Monday nights.

Yes I also have had a mammogram and pap done too. So I sure hope I can get my insurance approval fast so I can have the surgery in Oct. Thanks for answering. I will try and make the meetings when I come out there. Would love to be other bandsters. Diane

I too have decided to go with the doctors that you have. I know they are starting an office out closer to me near Arrowhead Glendale/Peoria area. I am glad to hear things are working out for you. Tell me how you feel now after having this done with these two M.D.s. Do you still feel safe and glad you made the decision you did?

Dr. S was really nice to me, said he would help me get approved for a medical reason, but his staff could not care less and were not even willing to bother with me. I was 2 pts too low on BMI but had 4 letters of medical necessity and the doc said yes, but the insurance lady didn't care at all and said no way to bad. I called the insurance since I really wanted it and asked if any doctor's office had actually worked for their patient to get them approved and they said Dr Blackstone in Scottsdale, and guess what? Their office cared and got me approved. The staff is who you deal with alot, so that is a factor in deciding on who to go with. The after care has not been too great though, so win some, lose some, I guess.

Dr Simpson is a very nice man. and a good surgeon my girlfriend went to him and he is very quick and transactional. I needed to hand held thru my journey so i went to Dr Fang and Dr Juarez at st lukes great staff and they help you with the insurance approval the whole way. Another reason I switched is my insurance covered the whole thing no out of pocket and dr simpson office still tried to get me to pay 1000 for after care and that was included in mine..

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
