How much cn you actually eat?

Hi all new to the group but I am relly struggling with how much I am actually able to eat. I had a bypass 4 months ago (and am able to eat way more than I expected. I can eat a round of sandwiches with meat ans salad on it with no problems, I binged the other day and had 6 slices of toast with Jam no problem. I have never had a problem with vomiting or indigestion. I was under the impression that I was only going to be able to eat two desert spoon fulls of food at the most and even had to be careful drinking Water. Please help I am at a loss.

I can about a half cup to a 3/4 of a cup at each meal depending on what it is. bread, I still cannot eat. It just sits in my pouch and hurts. Drier meat forget it. I can eat salad and probably more like a cup of salad. I know I will continue to pick at my food as long as it is in front of me. I eat and when I'm done I put my plate up right away. I eat until I'm content. If I think I'm hungry between meals I drink Water before I ever stick food in my mouth. Some days I feel like a fish because I drink so much water. I eat 3 meals and may have a small snack like nuts, cheese stick or a few grapes. Usually a whole cheese stick is too much of a snack. I keep my bites small and chew chew chew. I can definitely eat more done days. I also have days that I can barely eat, these are my tough days and it really bothers my husband. It's really finding out what works for you.

Oh Julie West, 6 toasts is way too much even for a normal sized and stomach.

You are stretching your pouch. Not good.

Do you have a nutritionist/dietitian? You need one immediately, to bring you back in line with the plan. I had my bipass 1 week ago, I certainly did not go through this for nothing.

Now is the time for you to watch you eat, exercise 1 hr a day even if it is only walking.

Call for a nutritionist today please! Let us know how you are doing.

I would also highly recommend seeing a therapist to help you figure out your triggers for overrating and emotional eating. I was diagnosed with binge eating disorder and have been seeing a therapist for 6 months. She has helped me immensely get control of my mindset and I've learned to deal with my emotions without using food to cope.

I understand, Julie. I am three months out from a band-to-bypass revision and I can eat more than I thought I would be able to. I ordered an entree salad with grilled chicken the other night and was able to eat the whole thing....but I read others who say they can take a few bites and be full. Part of me thinks my stomach pouch is very stretchy from years of the band below that area, but I can't be sure. My surgeon says he isn't too concerned about it, people are different. I'm not the best at following the diet rules. I try to make the best decisions I can but stray some....like I get a broth-based chicken Soup at a Mexican restaurant but will splurge on some chips. I'm just not willing to do zero carbs, but I try to make the best decisions I can without fully sabotaging myself. Changing is HARD, and it's no secret that even trim people enjoy eating. You can do it!

I'm only three months out, but I can eat about a cup of something really liquid-y like Soup. Otherwise, I can only manage about a half a cup.

Before the surgery I did a lot of research and what I thought is that it was impossible to over eat without feeling painfully full and vomiting. I am also very disapointed with the Hospital and to some extent the surgeon. I have had no support from them at all. Maybe I am expecting to much but thought this was the miracle cure. I have made an app locally to see a Psycologist but have never thought I have an eating disorder just thought Iacked control. What will happen if I keep going as I am. I am exercising more and lost a lot of weight th two weeks before the surgery while on the liquid diet but I thought that the surgery had gone wrong. I might be still looking for excuses but I have seen an exray of my stomach and the didn't actuall remove or seperate any of it they just used like a blanket stich to seperate some away. It was called a wire something. Has anyone had this? I can't find any info on this anywhere.

And thank you all so much with the advice. I think this is the support I am missing.

I am eating Gerber baby food along w the suggested portions as they match up w what I'm allowed to eat right now and I don't have to measure. I'm not a cook. Hate it in fact. I love to bake though so maybe a couple months down the line I can experiment with high Protein muffins and other heathy baked goods. :)

@@Julie West We should not think of WLS as a "miracle cure", but simply as another (powerful) tool to help us lose weight. As the other posters here have said, in the end it is about the choices we make in what kind of food and how much we eat that allows us to lose weight. The surgery and smaller pouch help us feel full faster, and malabsorption helps too, but if we don't follow an appropriate way of eating we can still gain weight.

I would definitely see your doctor about this, to see whether you are stretching your pouch or something else is an issue.

I think for me training myself to eat slowly, (painfully slowly, one bite per minute) has really really helped. I get very full. I was told I am supposed to stay mostly full for a full 25 minutes in order for that fullness to last 5 1/2 hours. It really works. I am 10 months out and within 5 lbs of my goal weight, 106 lbs lost.

Like many, I am able to eat more on some days than others.

There is no miracle cure. Hopefully they shared that from orientation session on. It takes work. It's not the easy way out.

Different surgeries are done differently. Some involve removing parts of the stomach. Other types of surgeries, including gastric bypass, leave them in. If you have real doubts, get a second opinion.

I would encourage you, like others have, to get back on the diet and fitness plan given by your surgeon. Focus on that and take advantage of the first year to year and a half when you can get the most benefit from surgery.

2 months out.

I feel I can eat a lot. But I definitely don't think I could eat 6 pieces of toast in an hour. When it's soupy I can eat the most. Sometimes I'll overeat on rice and/or Pasta (which means I eat more than a two spoonfulls). I tried Sushi the other day. I was able to eat two pieces. I used to be able to eat 6 whole rolls.

Unlike you, I also throw up. Especially when I eat too fast. I've spent entire days throwing up, usually due to a blockage. (I find pounding liquid and vomiting helps me clear blockages).

Anyway, yes, I can eat a lot, but not quite as much as you. I'm still losing weight though for the time being, but I'm definitely not doing it the "right" way. The bypass is, however, helping to train me to eat slower and eat smaller meals.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
