I could seriously scream! DENIED

Recommended Posts

omg! I can not believe my insurance company! They denied me stating there is not sufficient medical records showing I have been overweight for 3 years. Seriously??? I mean seriously. ugh.

Okay, my rant is over...

I will definitely be resubmitting and jumping through their hoops.

Oh no!! I'm still waiting on my insurance approval. I'm so nervous. What insurance do you have?

I have BC/BS of AL... hopefully I can get this fixed and get approved.

I hear the Lindstrom patient advocacy group helps with appeals. http://wlsappeals.com/

I am so sorry! I totally understand the frustration and how devastating it feels to be denied. About 7 years ago I had went through the whole program just to be denied 3 days before my surgery! Keep trying though and don't give up! I did give up for several years and went back to trying to lose weight on my own. This past January I deceided to try for surgery again (with a different insurance company). I made sure I was meticulous about playing by all of there rules. This past Friday I received final approval for my Sept 15th surgery! So don't give up! Find out exactly what they want from you, what kind of documentation they want, etc. and appeal, appeal, appeal! In the mean time, keep looking for support for your friends on here! We're here for you! Good luck!

I'm sorry. I've been overweight for 34 years and my insurance said flat out NO. So I'm paying out of pocket. $26,000. But I'm tired of being obese and I'm worth it. I, too, and extremely frustrated that my insurance wouldn't cover it. To add insult to injury, I was going to gastric sleeve, but after being scoped last week, I was told that my hiatal heria was so big/bad that I'd have horrific acid reflux--worse than I have now--if I went with the sleeve. So my costs jumped from $23,500 to $26,000. That extra $2500 isn't in my budget but I'm going to put it on my AMEX and just make payments to pay it off. I absolutely have to do something about my weight.

*Update**

So my surgeon's office called insurance and found out they accidentally left out a year of my charts showing that I was overweight. So now they have resubmitted and hopefully I will have good news here soon! Keeping my fingers crossed.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
