First day back home

Recommended Posts

This is my first day back at home after getting my sleeve. Meds working to keep nausea at bay, now the battle to keep sipping.

I had my sleeve surgery on Tuesday, getting down the liquids was REALLY tough the first few days. Especially Water for me, made me really nauseated. 4 things that made a huge difference for me: 1) I was given liquid lortab for pain which I was taking every 4 hours because I was terrified (I waited too long in the hospital to get pain medicine when I fell asleep, and woke up shaking and in the most pain of my life). But the lortab made me feel AWFUL. I last took it Thursday at 5:30 AM, then switched to liquid tylenol every 5 hours. I was scared at first, but it worked! No more awful side effects and Water was WAY easier. Today I have stopped all pain med and I'm doing great! My incisions hurt a little, but very tolerable. Water is going down almost as normal, and I'm able to take bigger sips.

2) I really did get exponentially better each day. If you asked me on Thursday if I'd feel this way Saturday, I would have said no way. But I feel great!

3) I won't lie, I could barely get 20 oz of water in my first day home. I only did 20-30 oz every day until today, which I'm already over 40 oz. for the day. My doc wanted at least 48 oz every day but it was just too hard the first couple days. Anyway, I'm still alive. Listen to your body.

4) The nurses gave me ice packs for my tummy and shoulders. I used them on my shoulders until yesterday and I'm still using them on my stomach once in a while. It seems to help after/during a Protein shake for some reason.

I was miserable with nausea days 3 and 4 but much better today, day 6.

I only got 12 ozs in one day and 9 ozs the next.

Today I will get 48, no problem.

Hopefully it keeps on getting easier!

Thanks all, this is really helpful! Surgery was Thursday, I stayed an extra day in the hospital because I was so concerned about not getting enough Fluid with the nausea. Meds for nausea are working, and I can take the fluids so far. Been walking since day one a lot as the docs and nurses suggested, and I don't have much pain from gas (I have been passing a lot since the night after surgery). Thanks again for all the support.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
