1NaturalLoser 20 Posted August 23, 2015 It's weird, I never was a coffee drinker but at 6 months post op that all changed. Now I drink it often but Decaf is my choice. I may have half decaf/half caf once or twice a week sometimes though. My doctor never restricted it but I don't think I had even one cup until several months afterward. mi75 1,235 Posted September 7, 2015 i was not a coffee drinker either pre op, but for the past several months i have a McDonald's sugar free french vanilla iced coffee almost daily. however, it has become a terrible crutch for me so i'm trying to give it up and go to hot coffee to break my iced habit... 4MRB4PHOTO 3,900 Posted September 7, 2015 (edited) Follow your surgeon's recommendations. I had Decaf coffee for 2-3 weeks post op, then switched to half-caf for about 3 weeks then regular coffee and presently have 2-3 mugs of regular coffee a day. I read studies that dispel that it is a strong diuretic. Caffeine is a little bit of one, but not where you should compensate for liquid lost to consuming caffeinated beverages. Caffeine in moderation is ok. If someone has a cardiac issue or ulcers, then they may want to be careful about how much they consume of it. Having Cookies, cake or doughnuts with your coffee or adding a few teaspoons of sugar and cream to your coffee all the time would be a bigger issue. Keep in mind that other drinks such as tea, and sugar-free sodas & drink mixes contain caffeine too. Enjoy. Edited September 7, 2015 by 4MRB4PHOTO
Junebug1971 41 Posted September 8, 2015 Since I'm totally off of caffeine, I drink Decaf. Love it.
jumanab66 0 Posted September 8, 2015 As a dietitian at a Bariatric center, I usually recommend Decaf coffee durning the full liquid phase (post-op week 1-2). Of course you should try to limit your intake to 1-2 cups/day WITHOUT SUGAR
Nurse_Lenora 903 Posted September 15, 2015 Pre op here and ... According to my nutritionist I am allowed my coffee. coffee with stevia and unsweetened almond milk if I *need* to lighten it a bit. I get terrible Migraines and know that caffeine is needed to help alleviate my symptoms. I have gotten migraines since childhood so way before I started drinking coffee so I don't think quitting it would change anything unfortunately.
