Back pain after RYB surgery

Recommended Posts

Is it normal to have back pain after gastric bypass surgery? Got bypass done this past tuesday but been having lower back pain nonstop. I know the gases can give you some pain but do not know if it has to do with my back hurting. Anyone can provide help please?

I'm having the same problem... lower to middle back pain. I think it's because of the beds in the hospital... and just being sore from surgery. It's the only reason I'm taking my pain meds at this point. A wedge pillow and heading pad is helping a lot.

It's probably a combination of a bunch of things; the hospital bed, the gas they had to pump into you, intestinal gas, and overcompensation of your lower back muscles trying to support your abdomen which has been greatly weakened by the surgery. Heating pad and sleeping in a recliner has helped me immensely. :)

I had back pain immediately after surgery due to lying on the metal surgical table, but it went away within two or three hours. Dilauded helped a lot. I have heard that gas will cause back and shoulder pain, and that walking is key.

Lower back pain could point to a problem with kidneys or gallbladder. Make sure you are drinking the required level of fluids. Kidney stones or gall stones could be the problem. http://www.diffen.com/difference/Gallstone_vs_Kidney_Stone

We lose a lot of weight during after surgery and our muscles and ligaments don't adjust so quickly and that's why a lot of us experience back and hip issues. But if you had bypass this last Tuesday, that is probably not the cause.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
