Sweetforlife

I was banded in July 2007. At the clinic by Dr. Mumford who is Dr. Coburn's partener.

I found the nursing staff very caring and kind. They take you up to the operting area. Ask you a few questions and then they have you change in to the hospital gown. They seat you in a lounge chair with a heating blanket. The anasteialogic (sorry for the spelling) comes in a chats with you. He was a very nice man. Then Dr. Mumford came in and went over a few things. The nurse comes in and takes you to the operating room. They put these massaging leggings on you. The anasteialogic comes in and tells you what he is going to do. He tells you he will be putting a needle inyour hand, you will feel an pinch and then you will feel your hand burn. Then he tells you he is going to put an oxygen mask on your face. The next thing you know you are in recovery.

I was a difficult person coming out of the medication. I pulled my I.V. out. I kept saying I do not want the surgery. I want to go home . I tired to get out of bed. I also kept hitting the devise they had on my finger on the bed railing. Through all of this the post op nurses were very kind. Once I came around they got me dressed. The doctor came to see me. I got a sick note for a week from him. The nurses gave me my perscription and called my husband . He moved the car to the side door. The nurses helped me into the car and off I went.

The next day Dr. Mumford called me at home to see how thing were going.

Hope this helps.

Your post was so helpful! Sweetforlife and I both go in on August 7th.

We are trying to get through the Optifast stage together. We both have three weeks to do.

Thanks for sharing your experience on surgery day so we know what to expect.

Hi, am just in the decision stage of chosing which clinic in the Toronto area to deal with. I was happy to read all the positive feed back in regards to the Surgical Weight Loss Centre. I live in Sault Ste. Marie and it will be quite the trip for follow care, 10 hour drive. I am hoping that someone will become available even in the Sudbury area, so my travel won't be so extensive. Traverse City Michigan is fairly close but I think I recall them saying that if it wasn't preformed there, the fill cost was $500. Any info appreciated :help:

Hi: Speaking from experience, make sure your decision includes where you can get fills. All GPs won't do the fills and you may need emergency defills. Going to the US involves a few things to think about. One I understand to get the income tax benefit you must go to the nearest clinic. Also, there is the costs to go the US which is the fills and the travel time to get an emergency defill/fill. I shied away from the US or Mexico because of the concern of acquiring health insurance. Does that affect you? If you have any health problem the insurance company can deny you health coverage because of "any related" issues. Everyone one that has high blood pressure for instance and has a heart attack can be refused because "it may be related". Hope I have given you a few ideas to contemplated. Doddie

Hi,

I am debating on which Clinic to go to, TLBC or SWLC, the one thing I am unsure about is how the follow up care and treatment with the SWLC clinic is. In the TLBC consalt, they talk a lot about the post op care, but when I went I spoke with SWLC there wasnt much mention about it. Can somone give me some insight into this please.

I've been banded at the SWLC for almost 27 months now and the follow up has been A1. I can either go to the clinic for fills or to speak with the dietitian or my surgeon or I can do it all from home via phone or email. The SWLC has a monthly peer support group meeting in Mississauga that is run by an at goal bandster. They have an online support forum of their own. They have web seminars so that all their patients can benefit from the seminar not just the local people. They have doctors and nurses trained all over the country to do fills in case you don't live the GTA. I can't say enough good about them and I had consult at both clinics and I just went with the one that I felt the most comfortable with. Both are great clinics but you need to figure out which one is the right one for you.

Where are you from. TLBC has tremendous support for locals but is lacking in long distance programs. I can call for any type of support regarding diet or queries about the band, but to find a fill doctor that is connected with the TLBC out here in BC is difficult. TLBC is connected to one fill doctor here but he has no fluro so if I had a problem, I would have to fly back to Toronto or use a doctor in Calgary. I have no hesitation is recommending the TLBC as Dr. Yau is one of the best. Just wanted to point out a small shortcoming that they are presently working on to improve. Doddie

has anyone heard of this clinic.

Yes the Credit Valley clinic is in Mississauga, but they have not much support for aftercare and out of all the bandsters I have met or spoken to, never heard of anyone who has gone there. The SWLC Toronto Weight Loss Obesity Surgery Lap Band Bariatric Surgeon Gastric Bypass is also in Mississauga near Trillium Health Centre and is well known with great reputation.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
