Hi Andrew,

I see you got banded in Feb.07 and you lost alot of your weight .......what is your secret or your Daily Diet. I am also a patient of Dr. Cobourn's.

My secret is the band. I have pretty good restriction right now so I am not eating really big portions. .75 to 1.5 cups of food max at each meal.

An average day for me consist of a protien shake for Breakfast and either a special fibre muffin we make at our house, or a yogurt or nothing else depending on what we have around.

lunch is after my workout and usually some left overs or a large Wendy's chili if I dont have any leftovers.

dinner is what ever my wife is having and it really varies, sometimes Pasta or a chicken dish, hamburger. I dont eat fish or seafood.

I dont really count calories, I just check from time to time to make sure that I am not eating too much.

I spend 50 minutes at 85% maximum heart rate at least 4 days a week which I think is the big part of the secret. I know from my past weight loss attemps that working out is the key for me.

I dont know if that will be much help, but from what I am calculating I am eating about 1500-1700 cal per day, and I burn about 900 at each work out. I am a pretty large framed muscular guy under this layer of fat, so I think that helps with burning off those calories. My BMR is around 2500 cal/day.

If you have any questions let me know.

Andrew

Hi there,

I was banded on June 6th this year by Dr. Colbourn. I can tell you from my experience that he is top notch. He is extremely caring of his patients, he explains everything in great detail. He called me the night of my surgery (at home) just to check up on me to see how I was. Now that's rare! He's the best. I can't say enough good things about him. You will have a wonderful experience with him. Trust me! Good Luck!

I am getting banded on Oct. 5. I am glad to hear all the positve reports. I don't have my preop info as yet. (bit too early) but what sort of preop and postop diets does Dr. Cobourn put his patients on?

The preop diet used by Dr. Cobourn and the SWLC is a 2-3 week diet which consists of 3 Optifast shakes per day plus an extra 225 calories worth of green vegetables. Drink lots of Water. coffee and Tea with no milk, cream or sugar added. Calorie wise dressings...fat free preferred. People tend to lose alot of weight in this period. I was on the 3 week diet and lost 23 lbs.

The postop diet is Water only for the first 24 hours after surgery. A liquid diet for 2 weeks after surgery. A puree diet your third week after surgery. A soft food diet your fourth week after surgery and from that point start introducing foods to your diet gradually.

I was banded by Dr. Cobourn last Friday (July 6th) and I too cannot say enough about him. He's very open and caring and all the staff at the clinic made me feel comfortable and cared for.

Tammy told me before my surgery last week that she and Sue are changing the post-op diet slightly and I was to do 24 hours Water only, 24 hours clear Fluid, then full Fluid until this Friday, then 1 week puree, and then 1 week soft food. So basically each stage has become just one week. A couple of days ago I thought there would be no way I'd even want to look at pureed food on Friday, but now I'm feeling much better and think the added nutrient intake will help speed recovery.

Good luck ;)

Hi there nume!

Just wanted to say that LMCHP is right they are indeed changing the post op diet and it is even easier now and quicker, also they are doing first fills a bit earlier too. I got mine at about the one month mark by Dr Cobourn when he came to Calgary. It was a very pleasant experience for me. I do not regret getting my band for a minute! I am pretty sure you won't either!!

Best wished to you and let the counting down begin!!

Hi LeslieLee: I am so very excited. I feel that October is a life time away but I am sure it will get here soon enough. I would have booked sooner, but its alot to save for. I'm at my highest weight, so I'm looking forward to getting rid of it.

P.S. I love your marching man on your ticker (pretty upbeat)

Hi all - I am new to the forums and have been "lurking" the past couple of days. I have a procedure date of August 24th with Dr. Cobourn and start Optifast on August 3rd. As a nurse and a manager, I look at caregivers (yes even doctors) with a very critical eye. First impressions are really important - my first impression was very positive - from the atmosphere of the waiting room - (thank God for walking into a waiting room without any arms on the chairs), to the receptionist, to the nurse and then Dr. C. and the coordinator - I was relaxed and very pleased that I had forced myself to share the literature with my husband and start the process of getting his buy-in. This is a big step and having confidence in the doctors, nurses, and clinic itself is going to be half the battle.

But by far, the thing that sold me was Dr. C's answer to my question, "With a procedure that has a 80-90 % success rate, what is the cause of failure in the other group?" His answer was "they don't get back to us when they hit their plateau's". He had apparently printed off a list of clients who had stopped with their follow-ups; there are a lot of them, - after the amount of money we are spending, I can't imagine what would make someone not keep up with trying. I am not kidding myself that this is going to be easy, but I think I stand to succeed through this route, whereas, I don't think I stand a chance of doing this without some sort of assistance.

Cindy

Hi Cindy, congrats on choosing a procedure and a surgeon that are both superlative.

It's interesting what you said about follow-up. When I was doing my research on the Lapband I spoke to Dr. Leung's office in B.C. and the nurse there told me the same thing. She said it was amazing how many lapband's they did and never saw the patients again. At the time, I remembering thinking the same thing you did -- how the heck could people spend 16k not to mention the psychological preparation for this kind of surgery and then not do anything at all to help the band help them. Seems crazy to me. Oh well, to each his own.

Way to go Cindy,

You sound like you have done your research and you know what you're doing. I am sure you will be happy with clinic both the day of surgery and during you post-op follow up.

Good Luck:whoo:

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well. I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening. So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this?? Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
