16 days post op, new pain

Recommended Posts

So i am 16 days post op. I have been feeling wonderful. Only used the pain meds on the first 2 days at home and then i didnt need them after that. Im drinking and "eating" ok, moving around like normal, driving etc. A few days ago, i started having this really sharp pain on my left side, it started in my back, which i thought could be a kidney stone or kidney infection. I called the on call nurse and they said it sounded like dehydration and to push the liquids and call back the next day if it doesnt get any better. i pushed Water as much as i could handle and the pain subsided, but then a new pain emerged on the front of my left flank. Its a sharp stabbing pain anytime i move or walk more then 20 steps. Im fine if i sit down or lay down. I had my 2 week checkup with my surgeon yesterday so i mentioned it to him. He didnt seem too overly concerned, stating he thought it was the way the sutures in the muscle can sometimes have a scissor like effect if i over extend or move too much. wth? ok, but why is it just now starting 2+ weeks out? he said it was normal but to keep an eye on it. This is near debilitating for me at work. Ive gone back to the pain meds when im home to try and combat it a little. I realize i just had major surgery and it will take awhile for my body to get back to normal. i also know the larger incision can have pain for quite a while, but this doesnt feel like incision pain. Has anyone else experienced this suture pain before? I consider my pain threshold very high, but this is concerning me.

I had that pain about 2 weeks post-op too. Combination of sutures and gravity. You are losing weight, and even a millimeter or two off that area will cause your muscles, etc., to move around a bit and stretch that suture. I had to use my pain meds for a few days, took it easy over a weekend, and the following Monday I was back to normal -- apparently the suture had dissolved. Mine started on Tuesday, about 18 days postop, and resolved the following Sunday/Monday.

yea i was the same way as well, i felt like i had been in a car accident by two weeks in, just generally sore and achy and had a pain in my side. My surgery team told me it was from maybe straining a muscle or from sleeping sitting up or on my side which i did often! i couldnt sleep in my bed until around week 3, i just couldnt get up..those muscles are weak for a while!

fast healing to you! and congrats

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
