Where are all the 50 something bypass patients?

Recommended Posts

I'm 57, 6 months post op and down 60 pounds since the surgery, with 40 pounds lost pre-surgery. Most of that weight loss was in the first two months. Since that time it is a slow and steady 5 lbs a month. I have to keep focusing on the healthy habits and activity levels. The surgery has helped, but it does still take work.

Just one week out from my VSG at the age of 58! Already surprised to put my winter coat on today and it was roomier! My recovery has been much less painful and difficult than I thought. Of course I wished that all the stars and moons had aligned earlier than age 58 but I am thrilled that I'm at a point in my life where I am able to be 100% physically and mentally in this game. Maturity has its privileges!

Hi, All!

I am new to this site/group. I am 58. Band installed November 2007. Moderate success over the years. Just as I reached 30 pounds from my goal, the band quit working. Weight, of course, rushed back on. In the course of seeking band fills, the band became infected and had to be removed in an emergency surgery January 2015. I thought I had learned to eat and perhaps I could manage without the tool, but gained ten pounds a year. I decided to do what I should have done ten years ago and pursue RNY. Fortunately, my husband moved me to Missouri and close proximity to some of the top dogs in the bariatric field.

I am two weeks out from surgery on 4/18/2017. Surgeons encountered minor complications due to scar tissue from the band, so the operation took twice as long. They kept me in hospital four days, for which I am grateful. Don't bounce back like I used to. I felt I knew what to expect after surgery somewhat due to the band experience. So far, I'm finding the bypass much easier. I don't feel "restriction" while drinking as I did with the band. I also don't feel hunger pangs or stomach growling. I am quite satisfied with the amount I can consume. In fact, it has been a struggle to consume enough Protein Drink each day.

My main challenge will be activity. I am a sedentary person, so getting that walking in is a challenge. Tomorrow is my 2-week visit. Looking forward to losing the staples as my incisions are well healed. Looking forward to moving to soft foods. So far, I am happy with this decision. Other than wishing I had done this first rather than the band, I have no regrets!

I look forward to being part of this support forum.

Hey DTrain!

I don't think anyone participates in this forum anymore! Ha!
Good luck with your journey. Two weeks out, I stalled for an entire week.
Also severely constipated for that week.
Everything is moving again.
Hope all is well with you.

I'm 55 and am new to WLS. I have been thinking about this for quite awhile. I have my consultation on Wed.
I have been reading many posts about bypass. I decided on this because it is the gold standard and I think it has the best results from what I have read.
I have tried to diet and exercise but the results have been dismal. My health has been getting worse and I don't see an end in sight. In the past 18 months, I have had 8 rounds of shots in my back, and 3 radiofrequency ablations. And my pain from the osteoarthritis not only gets worse, but is spreading to my hips and knees. I can no longer walk unaided but need my cane. This has limited my activity. This summer was the worse! My 9 yr. old granddaughter, who I've practically raised from birth, came to stay with me for 7 weeks. I wasn't able to do the things that meant so much to her before.... no long walks in the woods, no hiking at our local park, no festivals and I constantly heard "Are you okay Ga?" from her when we did go out cause I was breathing so hard [emoji20]
I was also diagnosed with severe sleep apnea and have a BIPAP machine, it scared the crap out of her! She actually asked me what she had to do if the mask came off and I wasn't breathing!!! Talk about a wake up call!
The first time I saw obesity on my medical report, I was in denial...... see I haven't always been overweight. I haven't wanted to really say this on here but this is my reality. I was very thin until I was in my mid 30's. Then I started gaining and gaining. It began when I started my bipolar meds. One of the docs decided that I was too thin and put me on a med that took me from a size 7 to a size 16 in 3 months! And of course, it stayed in that range until I had my hysterectomy. Then I gained and gained.
Anyway, I don't want to be the fluffy Ga who can't do anything fun with her.... I want to be healthy and happy. I want to set a good example for her and my other granddaughter. I want to be there for their journey thru life.
I want to be able to live again and enjoy life for the next 40-50 years. I don't want to be in worse health than my 83 year old Mom, like I am now!
I'm glad I found this forum and all of you!

I'm bipolar and Seroquel (quetiapine)has been my nemesis,it makes me very hungry after I take it at nighttime. Unfortunately I've tried other meds but have had to come back to Seroquel,it's been a catch 22 for me for 14yrs. Good luck with the consult.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
