Where are all the 50 something bypass patients?

Recommended Posts

I'm 55 and waiting to go over test results with my surgeon in about a week. I am hoping it will help me decide between sleeve or bypass. I have met all of my insurance requirements so just need to submit request and schedule surgery once I'm approved. I'm guessing I will have surgery in late May.

No way!I was 51 back in Dec.2015.You will feel so much better. It is a slower steady weight loss as you get older but after the torture of the lapband ...it's easy!!!I feel 100% better.

I have never looked my age and my skin has always been my best feature. Nobody ever believes I am in my late 50s. I turned 56 in the hospital and the nurses were amazed at my age too. My biggest fear is losing that. I do not carry weight in my face if you only saw my face pictures you would never guess I was heavy. I am hoping that helps me.

So as vain as it sounds that is my biggest fear.

The reason I picked the GB. was of how many have had other weight loss surgeries and then came back and got the GB. I did not want to do that.

Good luck with whatever Journey you choose. ♡

I am 56 and saw my surgeon for the first time yesterday. I need an endoscopy first because of GERD & Hiatus hernia. If all goes well then hopefully will have RNY late July.

The main reason for choosing WLS is because I need knee replacements in both knees and the surgeons told me I have to lose weight before they will do the surgery. I am also hoping that losing some weight will help my back pain which only started when I got over 90kg.

I am a bit worried about saggy skin, but I figure I can hide it under my clothes, it's not like I want to impress anyone, I just want to be more comfortable in myself.

Hi Nymea, I'm 53 and my sleeve surgery is June 6th. I'm getting nervous and am concerned about the extra skin. I hope I can hide it well too.

Good luck to you. : )

Hi. Sorry for the delay but I just got back from vacation. I am scheduled for RNY on June 22. They found Barrett's cells so my doc won't do the sleeve. My bypass has been approved but am still waiting for insurance approval on repairing a small hiatal hernia. I start my liver shrinking diet on June 1. Its starting to get real!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
