Things I never thought I'd say... surgery in Tijuana

Recommended Posts

My story has been a whirlwind of decisions and changes. I mean, there was a lot that led me to this point, but I have totally changed my life in 4 weeks. About a month ago I was looking at the pictures from a recent family reunion and I was wondering how I was going to delete my picture from everyone's Facebook page. This led me back to thoughts of losing weight and gastric sleeve.

I have been investigating bariatric surgery for a couple of years but my BMI was 33.5 - too low to qualify for even self-pay. And to top it off, I had the nerve to not even have any other illnesses. Having tried every diet and pill on the planet, frustrated doesn't even begin to describe my mental state.

Just by chance I found a website that helped people get surgery in Mexico. "I want to have surgery in Tijuana" is not something you hear in everyday conversation, so I did a lot of research and contacted a few people and found out that this is something people actually do.

I quickly made my decision and booked a flight. I went by myself and I was so nervous. I didn't really know what to expect - I didn't think it would be some guy with a steak knife and chickens clucking in the background - but it was a real hospital with real medical professionals. I met Dr. Almanza briefly - he had a bunch of surgeries under his belt (no pun intended) and everything went as I was told it would.

I am 2 weeks out, and no real problems. I just need to connect with someone who has, or is, going through the same thing I am.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
