Can I have over cooked rice during week 2 post op?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone

I'm in my phase 2 also known as Week 2 of my VSG journey I have been quite weak and in need of some energy boost. Can I have some overcooked rice food processed?

That depends on your surgeon/dietician's plan for you. It certainly wasn't allowed on my plan -- I was on liquids and even when I moved to pureed and soft foods, high-carb, high-calorie, low-protein, low-nutrition foods such as rice were not allowed. My advice would be for you to have a Protein Shake and get some rest, you are still recovering from major surgery -- but I am not your doctor or your dietician and you shouldn't be taking advice from me or any other internet stranger. My real advice is that if you are unclear as to what is permitted on your eating plan, get in touch with the medical professionals who are caring for you. Good luck!

What Proteins are you having ? Are you getting all your fluids/vitamins in?

You are bound to be tired/weak, you just had major surgery! Speak to your team and see what they say. Personally I wouldn't be touching rice.

Listen to your NUT, but I personally wouldn't go anywhere near rice for quite some time. I'm a year out and I still find rice challenging to digest. Also there's not much nutritional value in rice except maybe Fiber in brown rice, but I'd spend my calories on Protein and make sure I was drinking enough. Good luck!

I would NOT try it yet. Rice tends to swell and do you want to risk anything just 2 weeks post op? Focus on meeting Protein and hydration goals....there is plenty of time for other foods later. It's hard and boring to do the pre and post op diet but so worth it - hang in there!

Oh and the main reason for feeling weak is dehydration. Also, could electrolytes or even salt intake be low? Either way, I don't think rice is an ideal food (well ever) this early. Do talk to your NUT or surgeon's office as they may have advice.

Rice is about the last thing I'd attempt 2 weeks post-op.

What everyone else said: Hydrate, rest, Protein.

Whenever someone says, "can I eat...", my first thought is always, "what does your surgeon/nutritionist say?"

Mine says no rice, Pasta, bread, crackers for six months.

I'm not sure why you think rice would be helpful. Perhaps some greek yogurt or a Protein drink.

Thank you everyone for your response. My diet plan booklet for phase 2 basically says yoghurt , cottage cheese, and similar texture foods. During my research online and in forums , it seems that everyone is allowed Protein shakes. I have scheduled an appointment with the dietician on Monday.

Wish me luck

Are you on a B-12? I have the B-12 nasal spray and I have almost limitless energy now.

I am more than 20 months post op and rice still gives me a stomach ache, one of you few foods that does. Be careful!

If you really feel you need the carbs for energy (though I agree with the posters above, there are other options) try oatmeal or cream of wheat instead maybe.

I drank G2 Gatorade. It's their "low calorie" but it has some. It made a HUGE difference for me in terms of hydration and energy. Some people need s few carbs.

What brand do you use? I would love to try this. My surgeon and NUT both have suggested adding a b-12 supplement.

No unfortunately .. At the moment I'm considering cerelac and maybe any electrolysis drink. My energy level today is even worst that yesterday ...

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
