From my expierence it can be way sooner then 5 months, thats what I was told also. I have a 35.5 BMI, with Rheumatoid Arthritus.Polycistic Ovaries, with blood pressure issues. I got 2 letter of recomendations (one from Primary, the other from Rheumatologist) and a medical evaluation. I have PHCS insurance through my husbands work. Things move quick (especially if you call and bug the crap out of them on a daily basis, checking to see if your approved) Im surprised how fast it did get approved.

Once I was approved I had a date that day. But that was back in the "early days" I'm sure since so many more are being approved it takes longer to get the surgery date. Good for you!!!!

Hi Diamond,

Once my tests were done, I was approved in 3 days and got my OR date that same day. The nurse in the office told me the more doctors that will recommend the surgery for you the better. Like distant0098, I had a letter from my PCP & Cardiologist. They wanted a 6 month diet with my PCP but I brought all the receipts from Weight Watchers, Nutra systems and other online diets that I tried and he said " You did it all and you need this surgery" and signed the form.

I have a friend who told me to do that, take all the bills to the PCP as that was what she did and her PCP signed her form. Just followed her advice and it worked. For me from start to banding was 5 weeks.

The other thing you might want to do is if they are making you have a battery of tests and they are being scheduled weeks apart, tell them to put you on the cancellation list and then follow that up with a call every so often. You would be surprised how many cancel and they will put you in their place. The truth is, if I didn't do that, I would have just finished the colonoscopy June 29th.

I wonder if self pays go through all those tests too? It must be so expensive for them.

Good Luck

Insurance approval July 5th, 2007 after only one month - I am soooo... excited. I work at a school and would like nothing better than to have the procedure before early August. I want to be in decent shape when students and staff return to school. The Barix Center in Ypsilanti Michigan is where I'll be going. Anyone have an idea of how fast it will flow from this point out? I am so very curious! Where will you be having your surgery Tracy?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
