After years of research I have finally started on the journey to have a bypass later this year. I have not got a date yet but am hoping for mid October. I live in NM and was excited to find out that I would actually be able to have the surgery here. Until recently you had to go out of state for it. Looking for others that are in process as well.

I live in Rio Rancho. They recently opened UNM Sandoval County here and are doing bariatric surgery. I think they are also starting to do them through Presbyterian, but as of right now, you have to have Presbyterian Health Plan.

Thank you all for the encouragement. I have had my first appointment with the dietician and my 2nd appointment is next Wednesday. I should have my psych eval sometime soon as well. If all goes according to plan, my 3rd appt with the dietician is end of September and then they should schedule me for surgery 2-3 weeks after that. Hopefully my insurance won't be a problem. I have a BMI over 40. I don't have any co-morbidity issues...but I'll be 50 in March so that's just around the corner if I don't do something soon.

I just had my RNY three days ago, on Monday the 17th. Even only three days out, I don't regret it at all. In fact, I have this content, hopeful feeling that I've done the right thing, the worst is behind me, and my new life is now beginning! If you have any questions or just want to talk, feel free to add me as a friend and/or message me any time. :) Congratulations on your first steps towards a healthier, happier you.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
