Alternatives to Omeprazole?

Recommended Posts

Does anyone take a prescription medication that is similar to omeprazole? My insurance won't cover it, so I'm buying OTC. This is fine, but I'd prefer to have a Rx that would be covered since I hit my deductible.

Thanks for any advice!

My doctor is putting me on chewable Lansoprazole, instead of the omeprazole. I was able to get omeprazole covered by insurance by having my doctor previously say that it had to be in caplets and not pills.

I've been on Dexilant, but you'll most likely have a more difficult getting that. You can follow your insurance company drug exceptions process and get your doc to request they make an exception for you. I did that with my Dexilant even though my insurance normally doesn't cover it.

I have extreme reflux and the only thing that works for me is a prescription called Dexilant. My insurance doesn't cover it though so I pay out of pocket. I can't wait to get my bypass on September 22nd as I have heard the reflux could be 100% gone.

If you go the Dexilant route you can save some decent money here.

Thanks for asking MadTown. I'm doing better every day... My biggest pain is back pain from laying so much on an uncomfortable bed. I'm not having much problem with Water, and had 1/2 a Protein Shake and some yoghurt today without issue. Once I get my drain out on Monday, I think I'll be able to move around a lot easier.

I'm not sure I understand why insurance companies make you avoid omeprazole. They did that to me, too. I take Pantoprazole instead. I don't know about over the counter meds though.

Thanks everyone! I asked my PA to change the script to Pantoprazole!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
