So doc says at my first post op appt ... no straws ! Because at first your sucking air ....

Ok ... I get that ...

But how about now?

6 weeks out today .. and I know I'd be willing to drink more if I could use a straw !

Any advice ?

My doctor told me the no-straw rule is nonsense and I tend to agree. I have never had an issue drinking from a straw and it helped me get more liquids in post op. You breath in air whenever you drink, straw or not, because you're breathing.

@chasingpolaris321

I AGREE !!!!!!

It's so strange ... I wanna try sooooo bad ....

But I am and always have been a "by the book" kinda girl ... it's so hard for me to "break" a rule ...

My husband even had to talk me into drinking G2 !

Crazy .... I know !

I'm not one to tell people to go against their surgeons orders, BUT.....

I've used a straw from almost day 1, and know a lot of other sleevers who do on this site.

Sometimes when surgeons differ opinions about something (like the straw thing), I find it's best to do what works for you. If you find using a straw puts way too much air in your sleeve and gives you gas or makes you feel bloated, by all means don't use it. I've never had any problems.

I try to avoid straws stills, but I have mindless drunk through a straw several times at restaurants where they bring your Water with a straw already in it and have had no ill effects.

I also drink through straws without an issue, but I was careful for the first 6 weeks. Also, I found a CamelBak Water bottle (Eddy model if you are looking online) that had a built in straw which didn't cause me to suck air (bite closure). It has made a world of difference getting in the fluids each day. You might try that as a compromise if you don't feel comfortable just doing straws.

The only way I could get enough Fluid is to use a straw. The idea is that you might suck air into your stomach and may feel stomach pain, but your stomach isn't a closed system and if you aren't getting any stomach pain with a straw, you're fine. I used a straw accidentally around the second week and I am now almost 2 years out and I always drink with a straw. It won't hurt you and it's one of those rules that someone came up with along the way and everyone else tends to still consider it a rule when in actuality there is no real reason for it, especially after your stomach is fully healed.

I'm almost 9 weeks out, and have used straws to drink iced coffee for the past few weeks. No problem for me!

I think right about 6-8 weeks was when my nutritionist said I could start using a straw again. I drink my Water in a cup with ice and a straw and drink way more that way. I would send your doc or nut an email and ask them if this is just a short term rule and if so when :) I like to follow rules as well.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
