Anyone thrown your scale away?

Ok, I'm ramping up for my surgery....having been on SOOOO many diets over the years and thinking again how I'm getting back up on that dragon and wondering if this time I should just forgo the whole weighing thing.

It causes me a great deal of angst. I tend to diet for the weigh in. I hate the scale. It talks back to me....failure failure.

This surgery is so drastic maybe i need a new approach. Do everything right and forget the scale monster.

Anyone try this approach ? As it is I'm too big for your average home scale so I have to either buy an expensive one (which will break or be too large for my bathroom) or just rely on Dr. visits.

@@Nibbler - I am also a scale junkie. I don't know if my sanity could handle NOT weighing in. I think you have to remember that at times the scale will not move at all but your body is changing regardless. I was stopped numerous times yesterday at work about my weight loss and I have been at work today 3 hours and I have been asked twice today. Scale hasn't really moved but about a .5 pound in the last 3 days but all I have heard is "how much more have you lost?"

If you can wait in between dr visits then I would go for it. I wouldn't go and buy a scale. The best NSV is trying on clothes you have worn in 5, 10 years and they fit!!! Of course my old clothes are not in fashion now but I remember wearing them :D and being able to ZIP pants is like sex!

my husband takes it, so i dont weigh in...i do work at a hospital so finding a scale isnt a hard task..but i made a promise to my husband to only weigh once a week so i avoid them!

it turns into a mind game after a while, im at week 14 and am losing slow...but im still losing and that makes me happy!

I put my away for a month and promptly regained nine pounds! So.......the scale is back again and I am down the nine pounds, but it took three months to lose what I gained in one month of not monitoring. My Dad was a scientist and frequently would say "You cannot control that which you do not measure."

I would not go out and buy an expensive one right now, but Walmart has decent digital scales that can do everything except jumping jacks and whistling "Dixie". Later on, post op after you have made some good progress, go buy one.

Your bariatric brothers and sisters are on both sides of the fence on this topic. Good luck with your weight loss.

The second I stop weighing, is when I start gaining weight. The scale makes you miserable, but it also keeps you accountable. I know immediately when I have gained a pound or two and then I take immediate steps to fix it. If you're never weighing, you never know if what you're doing is working. I have weighed myself and written it on a calendar the vast majority of days for the past 12-15 years. I can see very clearly that the months where I stopped weighing myself, is when I gained a lot of weight. Unfailingly when I weighed myself everyday I lost weight or at the very least maintained.

Throwing your scale away is equivalent to the idea that ignorance is bliss...until of course you have to get on the scale again and you realize you wasted a lot of time living in bliss only to be dropped into a pool of misery. :)

I think regarding frequent weighing and the scales everyone varies. In the beginning during my quick weight loss period I only weighed once every week or two weeks. I would feel happy because the number was larger than if I weighed everyday.

Once I entered into the maintenance phase I do way better weighing everyday. The scale keeps me accountable. If I see it go up by a pound or two I know I have to cut back for a few days.

Don't invest in a new scale.

Even though my home scale was weighted for my weight, it never word weigh accurately when I was at my highest weight so I only weighed at my doctors.

That worked great for me post-op because every time I weighed at the doctors I showed a significant loss. I didn't have to agonize over stalls like many folks on here. Now that I am further out and my scale weighs accurately I still don't weigh very often. Certainly no more than once a week and usually every two or three weeks.

If you follow your program, and do what you are supposed to do, you will lose weight. Since I don't lose weight at a constant rate, weighing frequently doesn't give me any information that is of value to me. What the number on the scale says does not change my Protein, Fluid, and exercise goals.

I myself believe if it's going to drive you crazy during the losing phase, don't weigh every day. But I believe during maintenence it's a must for accountability.

This topic is perfect timing for me. I feel like I'm a bit too obsessive right now - 2 weeks out. I'm thinking I'll ask my provider if I can weigh in at my visits for the first 5-6 months. I figure if I'm tracking what I'm eating and exercising then I know what changes to make. My RD from a couple years back was always about "how do your close fit?" I can see it going both ways, but I don't want to be obsessive either!

        Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

        Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
