Disney and Pre-Op Diet

Recommended Posts

So i finally got my date- 9/23! Feels like it will be here before I know it!! I am very excited for this next step in my life to become happier and healthier. I will do anything to make this surgery a success, but I am getting pretty nervous about my pre-op diet which starts in the middle of a big Disney family vacation that has been planned for over a year! Due to insurance changes in October (no longer covering bariatric surgery), this date is my saving grace! My surgery center is pretty unique with their pre-op diet, everything is pre-packaged and portioned out requiring microwaves. This terrifies me while in a theme park! Does anyone have any recommendations for surving the family dinners without eating with them. I am so worried about having to find a microwave and eating before/after family meals because I can't take a pre-packaged meal into a restaurant. I think I just need reassurance that this is going to work!! I am so excited for my new life and want to make my pre-op diet successful!

Hi, I worked for Disney! All you have to do is take your food with you! They will be more than understanding and microwave your foid for you. You will have no problem finding a microwave. They have them in the coffee shops and restaurants...

I must say it is difficult to go to a theme park, and stick to your guns. Also remember that your hotel has a microwave as well, plan your day right and you'll be fine.

Update...so my husband called Disney for me. Unfortunately, its not looking possible for me to access a microwave in the park. He is going to talk to one more person today, but its not looking good. They even called the Baby Centers and they said no. We are looking at getting a rental car so that we can get back to our resort (not Disney) easier during the day so that I can warm my food. I keep telling myself this is for my health and my future!!

Is there anyway you could heat up your lunch in the microwave at the hotel and pack it in one of those thermos that keep food warm. My daughter has one she takes to school for lunch and she says the food is still warm- not piping hot but edible?

You can do it!! Keep us posted

I have not thought about that. Thank you for the idea! I hope it would make it to dinner :)

What about saving the actually parts that need a microwave for while you are at the hotel and eating the other parts (surely each item can't need microwaving can it?) while at the parks? Even if that means eating dinner for Breakfast or something.

It is pretty much all microwaved besides Quest bars. We are talking things like Soups, eggs, pasta-ish meals, etc.

So have the quest bars in the park and the others before and after!

I would look into little insulated containers and warm it in advance. I also just wanna support you -- I just got back from our week long family vacation; I was on my pre-op diet the whole time. While it wasn't as difficult (or awesome) as Disney, I did find it difficult sometimes. My suggestions are to ask your hotel if they can help, citing "medical need" for the reason. IN my case, the hotel waived the charge for an in-room fridge because it was a medical need. I also found I needed to have something to do during meals; a book to read, or a game to play on my phone. There were times I just asked folks to eat meals without me, because sitting there does get pesky. Maybe you could schedule a spa visit or even a special treat for you (tour, or something) when they're doing a meal? Be gentle on yourself. Oh, and if you can get a letter from your doctor saying you're under medical supervision and have a special diet, it may help you get your needs met. Just remember, you say, "medical need" about this. :-)

I would suggest going to a camping/outdoor supply store. They may have some sort of contraption (yes I said contraption lol) that could heat up food or keep it warm.

What about warming the food up at the hotel and keeping it in an insulted tote in the car? If all else fails, Quest bars and Protein (meat) in the park! Please don't let this ruin your trip or surgery. The best to you.

Great news!! Had my preop 1/2 day class today and bought all my preop food! Ny nutritionist and the surgeon both agreed that I would be fine to start the diet the 1st day I return! No preop hassle while in Disney :) So grateful for my surgery team, they are so accomodating and understanding! Thank you everyone for your suggestions, feeling more ready than ever now!!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
