Elevated Liver enzymes 4 months post op

Recommended Posts

Hope somebody out there can help me out, I'm 4 months post op (down 54lbs, yay!). Had a follow up with my surgeon last Friday and reviewed my blood work. Everything was great (cholesterol down to 164 from over 200 off my Lipitor) A1C was back to normal. The only thing she brought up was that my liver enzymes were elevated (ALT was 90, AST was 69). She said sometimes during surgery the liver gets moved around and this may be the cause. She did not seem concerned at all. The other thing is, it was my PCP that did the blood work and didn't notify me with any concerns either.

Hoping there may be someone (physician?) out there who can allay any fears I have or a further explanation of why I might get these results. Thanks in advance for all your help!

Sometimes elevated liver enzymes may be a signal of gall bladder issues....that was my expeince and ended up having my gall bladder out. I still have slight elevated enzymes, but that just be my "normal" level...more blood work to follow! Good luck!!

Is he repeating the test in a month? If you continue to have concerns I would recommend going to see a gastroenterologist/hepatobiliary doctor.

I would say gallbladder as well. As a side note, if it's throwing your blood work off...RUN do not walk to the gastro. Best to you.!!

I agree with the gallbladder.. could definitely be that.. just went through it. I've seen some people say their Doctors put them on medication for gallstones.. so maybe that would work fo ryou.

Mine was elevated when I went back at 6wks. My doctor said it was coming down it was just so high to start with. Do you know what it was to start with

Mine are elevated 1 month and 3month post op. I don't have a gallbladder, is it from the large fat loss your liver is over worked and the elevated Protein intake?

Mine was also elevated, caught by my PCP. They said to cut back on drinking..and I was like umm..haven't done that in months so..wtf. I just shrugged it off, I have had zero gallbladder issues that I know of. Now I'm nervous and feel like I should have mine checked again...

I currently have fatty liver. I am pre-op still. My pcp told me weight loss can help lower liver enzymes but rapid weight loss can cause elevated liver enzymes. It could just be the rapid weight loss. If that's the case when your weight loss slows they should get back to normal.

I had elevated at 6 months post op. Did an ultrasound and everything was fine. They said it was from the rapid weight loss.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
