Will we ever be able to take vitamins and calcium that we can swallow?

Recommended Posts

This must really vary for everyone, as I have been taking full-sized pills since my second day in the hospital, including a huge capsule to prevent gallbladder problems, which I have to take twice a day. I just take them one at a time and wait a few minutes between each pill.

My nutritionist insists on chewables and crushing pills but I couldn't do it anymore. The taste was awful. I start back to swallowing pills at about 2 weeks post-op. My surgeon was fine with it, he just told me not to tell the nutritionist lol.

I did buy the petite version of the Calcium citrate. The petite are big enough, I'd hate to see what the regular ones look like.

I've been taking regular Vitamins and pills since about two weeks out also... I don't see why anyone should have to do powdered/chewables for longer than a month at most. Once you're on solid food, you should be fine.

Omg thank you guys! They tell us post op that it is imperative we don't vomit, yet they force those chewables on us!!!!! ;)

Ditto the others. I was able to find a Multivitamin that is about as small as an Advil which made me very happy. All my tests have come back good so it must be a good Vitamin. I do take the chewable Calcium but only because I like the taste of it.

Agree with the others. I take all of the pills that the surgeon wanted and some additional ones that my sister, also a doc, added. I just bought one of the "old lady" weekly pill holder and I take it to the office. Then I just take them one at a time over the course of the entire day.

I love the multi-vit that I found. It's actually a prenatal Vitamin made by Rainbow Light. They sell a mini-tablet version that is way easier to get down. It's a food based Vitamin with Probiotics and a bunch of extras. :D

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
