MI Sleevers: St. Joseph in Livonia vs. Barix Clinic Ypsi?

Recommended Posts

Hi there, I'm a pre-op girl still looking at my options for doctors/hospitals. I've contacted my insurance and I know I'm covered, so at this point I just have to make the decision of where I think will give me the best care. I've heard a lot about Dr. Zeni at St. Joseph and was originally going with them. I've contacted that hospital and they seem very nice and centered on education. But, I've also heard a lot about the Barix clinic in Ypsilanti. Their program, specifically for aftercare, seems to be stellar, but I've not heard/read much about their doctors.

Now, while Ypsi is closer to me, I'd much rather go with a place thats going to give me the best chance possible to be safe, healthy, and have a great sleeve experience.

Anyone have experience in those two offices have any kernels of wisdom to give me in aiding my decision? (I'm thinking any tentative surgery date shall be for Feb 2016, just btw)

Thanks to all in advance, I am really loving this forum. I've found out so much information here!!

I just had my surgery on 7/29 at U of M. I know you didn't mention it as an option, but they have a great program with lots of education opportunities, and the 2 RDs that I've worked with are fantastic. There are 3 surgeons--I've heard good things about all three, but I had Dr. Finks. Just thought I would throw it out there because I don't know anything about the programs at the other two hospitals. ????

Congratulations! I wish you a safe and healthy journey.

Thanks so much for posting, honestly I'll take all the info I can get. I really am still just looking into those two programs, but I have heard great things around this forum on Dr. Finks. I'll definitely keep that in my back pocket, I a girl that loves options. lol

Thanks so much again for taking the time to reply, newlifebeginning. ♥

Are either of these programs "center of excellence" rated?

When I lived in metro detroit and was considering the surgery about 7 years ago my U of M dr. told me to go to Beaumont. I have since moved and am preparing for my surgery Sept. 9. My hospital has the "center of excellence" rating. Hopefully I'll make it though to the other side....the light side : )

If i still lived in the area I would chose U of M. Their program might be newer but I have a lot of faith in the quality of Uof M I am not familiar with the two you mentioned.

I actually met with Dr. Zeni today and he is nice quiet gentleman. my surgery date is September 16th. I work for the U and I am not sure of they are a center of excellence however Dr. zeni's practice is. he has done over 900 surgeries to date.

@Jazziegrl: That's awesome. :D I've been hearing (well, reading xD) such great things about him. I got their packet in the mail, and from the thickness I can tell they will be thorough. I'm pretty set on Saint Joseph now. You guys have been great. I hope everyone continues posting information... you can never know too much :D

I was very happy with Dr. Zeni. I feel I got great care at St. Mary's. And it's really close to my house! ????

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
