Does working out slow down/enhance weight loss for some of you?

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I am waiting for the day I get cleared to work out, but want to hear from some of you out there. When you work out did it slow down weight loss for you? Or was it the same? or did it enhance it?

Because pre op, I would be on a diet and would work out, and i would lose slower than if i were to just be on a diet- what do you guys think? what are your experiences?

I was stalled for a week or so. Then right after the 3 week mark I started doing 33 minutes on the elliptical 5 days a week, I lost 10lbs in the past week. I went to the gym 2 days the previous week and everyday this week. I go to the gym as soon as I wake up and work out on an empty stomach drinking Water the whole time, then I drink my Protein Shake on the way home. I have a recovery shake I drink.

Thanks!! That's a lot of determination. I'm gonna try to go in the morning everyday. Just afraid of the slow weight loss but if it tones me, all the better!

I debated working out also, because with calories so low I thought it would throw me into starvation mode.

I changed my mind for 2 reasons. I work from home and I get very little organic activity. No walking around an office or walking feom the parking lot. I have to chose to be active. Then there is Constipation, being active helps keep you regular.

I work out as soon as I get up or it won't happen. I wake up put on on my gym clothes. Take the dog out. Go to the gym. If I tried to go in the afternoon or evening I would never make it.

I found when I was doing more resistance/strength training, it did slow the weight loss a little. I started running, and found it was much more steady. Now I mix the two up a little.

It's what you want from it and how you work out, I use weight training and it has enhanced my weight loss, and I've had significant muscle gain, and I also don't have as much loose skin in certain areas, but I do different things at the gym, low weights high reps for toning, and heavy weights low reps for muscle, I alternate, and it's paying off, I would recommend that you do cardio and light resistance training, and as soon as your able join a class, even Yoga, I also see results sooner than other because I use rest periods, some people go every day, I go three times a week and rest on the weekend, but that is what works for me........ Also think outside the box, there are other options like Krav Maga, cross fit, bootcamps, and mall walking groups....

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
